Critical issues in understanding and resolving trauma - by Stephen
Bisbey Bsc Psych. , CTS
This talk is on a cognitive model that demonstrates how trauma (and
PTSD) comes about and how its symptoms can be overcome. The model is
presented by its developer Mr. Stephen Bisbey.
The model complements and clarifies the principles underlying the
technique of Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) - a structured
imaginal exposure method for enabling a client to fully assimilate
and accommodate their past traumatic experience. TIR is a method
developed principally by psychiatrist Dr. F.A. Gerbode, Controlled
comparative studies with other methods for resolving PTSD have
demonstrated TIR to be consistently effective at resolving PTSD and
other effects of traumatic stress. It accomplishes this by
gradiently enabling a person to inspect and discharge the emotional
and cognitive content of the trauma. The resolution of the condition
typically ends with a cognitive shift as the client regains
awareness of the cognitions that underlie the emotions of the
Trauma. Experience and testing have shown these cognitive shifts to
be very significant and of a permanent nature for the client.
