Dear Trish,
Please call your Doctor for answers. I know how worried you are and how hard it is to see a loved one so stressed just to get air. I lost my Dad to emphysema and I now have it as well. I see the fear on my family's face and the worry so talk to your Doc. for facts and also ways to may your Mom comfortable, spend good time with her let her know you care, the more relaxed she is the less stressful it is for her to get air.
My sister who is also 61 has been on CO2 now for 3 years and is doing ok...she is on 24/7 she is limited in what she is able to do and has learned to pace herself to make the most out of what she can do. I use CO2 only at night unless Im having a bad day or asthma then I use it more. I am only 52 so Im still at the stage of learning to live with this and make the most out of it...
I wish you and your Mom the best and be sure to talk to your Doctor...read online about emphyseman on the American Lung web site it has some good info....
Let us know how your and your Mom is going and if you just need to sound off feel free to do so...but take care of yourself and good luck

My Mom has emphysema and is on oxygen 24/7. She recently contractedsh
pneumonia and is hospitalized. She is now on 6l of oxygen and still
cannot walk without distress. She is 74 yrs. old. I fear that this
is the end. Her oxygen levels are fluctuating from 83-88 on 6l of
oxygen. How low is too low on the oxygen levels? I am very
frightened about all this.
