SmokeFree Hearings in Boston, NYC, and Suffolk County (NY)
Smokefree workplace legislation is being considered in major cities and counties around the country, including Boston, NYC, and Denver. Currently California and Delaware are the only states to have passed smokefree workplace legislation for ALL workers (including office, restaurant, bar, nightclub, and casino workers). This month, three major smokefree hearings will occur in Boston, NYC, and Suffolk County.
Smokefree workplace legislation is primarily to protect workers who spend 8-10 hours daily exposed to cancer-causing smoke. It is NOT so much to protect patrons who spend one to two hours a few times a week exposed to smoke, although their health is certainly important too.
BOSTON

NEW YORK CITY
Next Friday, December 13, the New York City Council will hold its 3rd hearing on smokefree workplace legislation. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Speaker Gifford Miller are believed to have resolved their minor differences and are expected to introduce a slightly amended bill. Both men are committed to protecting ALL New York City workers from having to breathe secondhand smoke in the workplace.

On December 17, Suffolk County will hold its 3rd hearing on smokefree workplace legislation. A vote on December 5 was called off due to the snow storm. Nassau County passed similar legislation earlier this year. Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Erie, Schenechtedy, and Albany counties have also begun considering smokefree workplace legislation. Westchester is expected to vote in January.
