************************************** Tobacco Lobbyists Line Up at NYC Council Door (1992)
The following "secret" document gives a rare glimpse of how aggressively the tobacco cartel lobbies City Hall. It shows that during the Dinkins administration, the tobacco cartel employed at least 12 of New York's most powerful lobbyists. Most other industries have one lobbyist. If you are interested in reading the 3-page document which is a memo from a Lorillard executive to Lorillard's chairman, click on the links below.
If you were not around in 1992, the lobbyist list reads like a who's who of the most powerful lobbyists in New York at that time. City Council Speaker Peter Vallone deserves a lot of credit for standing up to these lobbyists and passing his legislation.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead
