Workplace Bullying, A Silent Epidemic, and the Healthy Workplace Bill

Section: Diary Topic: Labor issues Workplace Bullying results in job loss for
38,100,000 Americans (36.8%), financial ruin, career loss, homelessness, and
sometimes death - 4866 suicides per year.  More than deaths by drowning,
salmonella, asthma, drowning, and fires.
   

  It also has a $1,100,000,000,000 economic cost.  It's bad for business.
   
  So, if it's so terrible, why don't we do something about this?

   
  A HWB (Healthy Workplace Bill) has been introduced to the state legislature
for 4 years.  It got out of the commerce committee, however did not get out of
appropriations.
   
  The feedback I get from lawyers and legislators is that it is too vague.
 Stakeholders in this issue need to compromise to move it forward.
   
  One idea is to take a page from youth anti-bullying statute RCW 28A.300.285
with appropriate modification for the workplace.  Such as bodily harm,
property damage, interfering with duties, intimidation or threats, disrupts
order,
etc.
   
  Presumably this is working for youth - so let's not reinvent the wheel to
apply it to work.
   
  I call upon ALL Healthy Workplace stakeholders to meet soon to discuss this
and other compromises to move this issue forward in the Washington State
legislature next term.

We all need to forward concerns/complaints to our state senators.  The USA is
one of few civiliz,ed places where there is no law in place to protect people
from emotional abuse in the workplace.  If it is not catagorzed as "sexual,
physical, or racial" it does not exist, this is not a civilized country's
behavior.  There was legislation in 2000 (i think) regarding emotional abuse in
the workplace, it has been put on back burner.

You are NOT a loser! That is exactly what these evil, jealous, conniving people
want you to think. And you are not alone-- I care!

I spent three hours this morning in a meeting with my manager and HR. Neither of
them believed that bullying/mobbing was going on. Apparently, they interviewed
each of my four coworkers yesterday to get their side of the story. Of course,
they all acted surprised and remorseful over how I am feeling. And my manager
had a list of things they said I had done wrong-- all lies except one incident
in which I followed the suggestion of the most senior employee. Resolution? We
had another meeting after that with my teammates in which I told them that
instead of talking about me amongst themselves, they should talk to me-- at the
time-- if they feel I am not doing something correctly. Hopefully, this will nip
things in the bud. I am very disappointed that HR cannot see what's going on,
but maybe they believe more than they are letting on because they gave me the
rest of the week off-- PAID. Kind of funny if they don't really think I've been
wronged. Anyway, I'm
  going to rest, pray, and try to start fresh (and WISER) on Monday.
