TIME mag looks at deadly diseases we misdiagnose in ER   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #4928 of 5673 |

This week's TIME magazine, pages 58-59, discusses "When Cells Stop
Working: Children keep dying from mysterious illnesses that have been
traced to tiny structures called mitochondria". We often midiagnose
Mitochondrial Diseases and dysfunction as atypical cerebral palsy,
atypical autism, atypical epilepsy, unknown metabolic disease,
fibromyalgia, CFS, MG, unknown GI dysfunction, SIDS, among many others.
The consequences of misdiagnosis of this terrible disease can be deadly,
especially in young children and babies.

There are two very intriguing videos at www.mitoaction.org
<http://www.mitoaction.org> (the Mitochondrial Disease Action
Committee) which help to explain this newly discovered but poorly
understood set of diseases, as well as articles and suggestions. Please
help to save lives by sharing this with our colleagues and patients, in
and out of the ER.

Other videos include the following:
* The TBS Storyline show: Ty's story. View the show info

* Informational video showcasing three families and their very
different struggles to find answers. Dr. John Shoffner also gives a
summary explaining mitochondrial disease.
