at our facility, our new grads are in orientation 6-12 weeks depending on how
they are doing. if the nurse has done nurse extern work at our facility, they
are generally ready to come out of orientation sooner than those who haven't.
just be patient and learn all you can while you are in orientation. of course
you should have resource people to turn to for guidance once you get out of
orientation, but it will still be difficult. if they are pushing you out of
orientation before you are ready, let them know. b/c if you are not ready and
they force you to fly solo, it will be on you if something happens, not them and
they will be quick to point that out.

The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) has a number of
excellent resources and an orientation program, that
is a bit long, but very comprehensive.
Don't expect too much too soon - there are a lot of
people that have done this for YEARS that still
haven't "seen it all or done it all" despite what they
tell you!
You can expect some heartbreak, some highs, some
lows....but you should be able to function and remain
comfortable after a good (thorough, supportive)
orientation process anywhere between 6-8 weeks and
grow over the course of your first year. Don't try to
tackle charge or triage.
