I work in a rural setting. Often the patient is known
to us, or we know their family (or sometimes they are
our family). We don't have enough staff to allow us
the option of being excused from working.
Once we had a wreck close to where I live (about 45
miles from the hospital). I was on-call with the
ambulance when the call came in. It was reported two
boys and an older man were injured in a rollover. I
knew from the location and description that it had to
be someone I was related to. It was 2 of my nephews
and their granddad. When we had everyone in the ER, I
looked across the room at my sister-in-law, and her
sister, and their mother. Each of then had son,
nephew, father, husband injured and were trying to
comfort each other as well. It was a really hard
situation, probably the worst one of my career.
