Your Congressman is a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor, Ways and Means Committee, or the Energy and Commerce Committee. These committees collaborated on a draft of health care reform legislation that was released on June 19, 2009. This legislation includes significant additional reductions in Medicare payment for all diagnostic imaging services, including echocardiography. The reductions would result from a provision that would modify the amount of time that all diagnostic imaging equipment is assumed to be used. Current methodology assumes that on average, medical equipment is used 50% of the time. The House proposal would assume that all diagnostic imaging equipment, including echo equipment, is used 75% of the time. This would reduce the equipment cost/minute of use, thereby reducing overall
payment.
ASE believes that enactment of this provision may result in a significant additional reduction in Medicare payment for echocardiography and other ultrasound services.
