Hi Everyone,
This is by Mark Leland and is called "Missing Pieces". PLEASE check
it out!
Needless to say, brought tears to my eyes.
Go to this site : http://www.frinkfes <http://www.frinkfest.com/>

click on the play button on the right hand side
Here is an excerpt from his bio on Mark Leland's website and the
reason behind writing this song.
The largest motivation behind this CD is the title track, "Missing
Pieces". Leland's manager and long time friend, Tim Calhoun, is the
father of Nathaniel, the inspiration for this song. Nathaniel, like
1.7 million other children, is autistic. After listening to the
stories of the challenges that families face in receiving treatment
for their children diagnosed with autism and watching the pain his
close friend was facing, Leland began to learn more and more about
autism. Together, Calhoun and Leland wrote "Missing Pieces". It is a
touching song that takes a listener through the anguish of having a
beautiful baby whose neurological sense become challenged in the
first few years of life. The autism community faces a constant
struggle of learning about the causes of this terrible disease and
the ever-changing ideas on effective treatment.
The philanthropic loyalty that Leland has towards helping this often
unnoticed group of dedicated parents has been the basis of his
decision to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of his
Missing Pieces CD to organizations that can assist families in
affording the treatment needed to help their autistic children
succeed. As the song "Missing Pieces" is being played more and more,
Leland is frequently asked to perform at autism benefits across the
country. Parents of autistic children who have heard his song are
sharing his enthusiasm with other members of their community.
Together, Leland and his fans are spreading autism awareness across
the nation and possibly, the world.
The Balloon Release for Autism Awareness held in Muskogee on
September 11 was a huge success! We had a response from a lady in
Strawberry, Arkansas, which is 315 miles away. I'd like to share
her e-mail with you as it is so inspiring!
Hello,
my name is Lisa Brady, I live in a small town in Arkansas
(strawberry) I was on my way to work this morning when I found about
seven of your balloons in a field. I stopped to pick them up, after
reading the cards attached I was amazed that they were talking about
autism. See, I work in Batesville at "The Community School". This
school's purpose is to help and teach children with learning
disabilities, such as autism and related disorders. We have children
from newborn to 18 years old. I love the work I do even though it
can be so demanding and challenging. But absolutley the most
rewarding thing I think I've ever done. for instance, we have a
child who just a year ago couldn't hardly speak and this morning was
able to sing four songs with the class and he also used his hand and
finger motions. This made all the teachers in our class so proud of
him and proud at ourselve for working so hard with him... It makes
it all worth it at the end of the day.
I would like to hear from you and a little about your program. I
would also like our class to maybe color some pictures and send them
to your school. We are also going to send balloons up.
Thank
you for taking the time to read this
LIsa Brady
(Strawberry, Arkansas)
Does anyone have any experience or information about Therapy Source
and/or Able Talk? Both are Tulsa speech therapy providers.
Has anyone used the speech therapists at JPMC for their child?
Please post to the list or email me directly.
Thanking you in advance, Cheryl
This is a great resource list to have. Thanks for posting it, George.

Hi Marty!
I'm glad to hear you're not moving!!! Yeah!!! I hope that's a
good thing for you! I just talked to someone yesterday about this
same issue, however we were talking about Tulsa. Dr. Scott at Tulsa
Developmental Ped's doesn't take Soonercare, but they have a couple
of new people there, and I'm not sure if they accept soonercare, but
it's worth checking in to. I have the number somewhere, just call
me if you need it and I'll give it to you. Remind me and I'll find
out about some in OKC. I don't know if I'd tell Soonercare you want
a second opinion, but just someone to provide treatment. Tell them
you're not happy with the current Dr. When you get in to the Dr.,
you can then ask him/her for their opinion.
I'll be working on preparations for the balloon release/party this
weekend and will need some help this week in cutting the ribbon and
attaching the cards. I would love to have some help! Let's talk!

In response to Neuro's that accept SoonerCare...My son sees Dr.
Gustavason in Tulsa. He is with Children's Medical Center. He is a
pediatric developmental neuro psych. Dr. Miller is also in the same
building and is strictly a pediatric neurologist. We also went the OU
route, but the costs were too much to bear. If you need #'s to these
Dr.s, shoot me a private e-mail. I'd be glad to help, I don't know if
you have tried either of them before.

Hi everyone, its Marty again looking for help as always. I still am
looking for another Doctor to take Britney too. I am fed up. I have a
call into the OU Medical Center in OKC...they will send me paper work
to fill out but they are saying that Sooner Care may not pay for a
second opinion. Anyway.....my question is, does anyone know of any
other doctors around the area either a Developmental Specialist, or a
Neurologist that accepts soonercare that I could possibily go to. Any
help would be helpful. I missed the last meeting, an update from
me...I won't be moving out of state. So I will still be able to be
involved. Can you please update me as to the birthday celebration, and
anything I can do to help prepare, please let me know as I am not
working anymore, well not outside the home anyway. I think I stay
busier now that I don't have a "job". Hope all is well with everyone.
thanks for your input.
Marty....Britney's mom in Muskogee
I have am beginning my seventh year of homeschooling this year . I am homeschooling my three oldest children in 6th, 4th, and 2nd grade this year. My child on the "spectrum" is only 3, so I don't have the background of homeschooling an autistic child, but if you have any general homeschooling questions, I may be able to help.
Hi Gina. I attempted homeschooling last year for my son (now 11) who is on the spectrum. We started out with great hopes and I had lots of materials ready. However, I just couldn't do it. He is distracted so easily and the daily environment in our home did not lend itself to the calm and quiet that was necessary. I also felt the pressure of being the sole source of education for my child. Fortunately, the school system worked with me and he went back after spring break on a shortened day, which is working out really well for us. We're on the same schedule this year and he's much happier. I didn't know I had that option.
If you are going to homeschool, there are a couple of yahoo groups for parents homeshooling their spectrum kids. They say they wouldn't have it any other way. If you'd like more info about our situation or to get the names of the yahoo
groups, feel free to email me privately. Good luck! I know how hard it is to try to find the best educational "fit" for our special children. Debbie in Muskogee
Dear Friends,
My son, Carter, just started back to school a couple of weeks ago
and -ugh! The public school system DOES NOT know how to help our
children. Last year was a disaster and I was employed as a school
secretary only 100 yards away from Carter's building! They like to
call the police on our children. This year I requested to be
transferred from my secretary position to being Carter's classroom
aid. Of course, they allowed it because they probalby knew they had
better due to circumstances in the past. This only opened my eyes
to how bad it really was. I cannot bear to send my child to a
school where he is viewed only as a discipline problem - even with
me at his side. My family has prayed and prayed about this and now
feel that homeschooling is currently the best option for Carter. I
am getting his curriculum from a private church school here in town
and they also invite us "homeschoolers" to go along on field trips,
etc. with their students. If anyone else with an autism spectrum
child home schools, please let me know your experiences with this.
Thanks!
Gina Dollarhide
(or better known as "Carter's Mom)
While waiting out in the lobby for Clay's Speech Therapist, a young
boy about Clay's age entered the lobby. While I was excited about the
opportunity for Clay to practice some of his new "friendship skills",
Clay had other ideas.
The little boy approached Clay (who was standing about 2 feet from
me), and held out a toy. Clay recipricated by spreading out his hands
and feet as wide as they could go (to stop the boy), and LOUDLY
proclaimed..."NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE HER, SHE'S MY MOMMY!" The little boy
turned around and walked off. I tried to explain to Clay that the
little boy just wanted to play, but he said "no, he wanted you, mommy."
I thought it was very sweet, but obviously we need to keep going over
our friendship skills!

Traey goes with me to work for the public school. It's a small
program and he is in the 3/4 year old class. I teach in the Toddler
room. The other day he asked if we were going to class. (Class is
this schools name, transition classes are 'big school' etc.) I told
him yes. He wanted to know if I would be in his class that day. I
told him no, I was going to MY class. He asked "Who's your teacher?"
I explained that I was one of the teachers. He started crying and
when I asked why, he explained that he was said because I was a
teacher. I told him there was no reason to be sad, and he yelled, BUT
YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE MY MOMMY! I explained things to him, and he is
fine with it now, but I still giggle. I forget how literal my little
angel can be! There was also a time not too long ago, I told him he
was making me laugh so hard that my head was going to pop off.
Needless to say, when we get on a giggle-fest, he cautions me every
time. "Mama, don't laugh too hard...I like your head where it is."
Sometimes when I get the most frustrated, Landon can do something to
make me melt. He and his little brother Levi went in my room and
dumped an entire box of vanilla wafers in the floor. As I'm
cleaning it up and grumbling the entire time, Landon comes over to
me and puts his arms around my neck and says, "sawwy" (sorry). It
was so hard to be mad after that! This was just one more example of
spontaneous speech which is now becoming more and more frequent.
Yeah!!
Last weekend I could hear Landon and his brother laughing
hysterically. I went down the hall to find Landon and his 16 month
old brother Levi playing in the toilet and having the time of their
lives. They were soaked from head to toe and their was a puddle of
water all the way to the door! I was a little grossed out and would
have been mad if it hadn't been so hysterical!
Share your stories about your kids funny moments! I know I'd love
to hear them! Sometimes its easy to get caught up in the problem
behaviors, as I know I do. It helps to look at the funny things
they do and laugh!

I just returned yesterday from Grove. Monday night was the first
night of the Grand Lake Autism Support Network. I came back on Cloud
9! It was so great seeing such a crowd. What an awesome bunch of
ladies and George, you're awesome too! I really enjoyed meeting
everybody! Thank you Gina for doing such a great job of getting this
group together. I also owe a special thanks to your family for all
their help and support in getting this group off the ground! I see
great things in store for GLASN! It also looks like we're going to see
community support networks spread throughout eastern Oklahoma and
beyond! We have gotten several requests for support networks in other
towns! Lots of luck to you Gina and to the group! Also, the library
books are coming in and we should get them distributed to all the
networks within the next two weeks!
Christi
I don't know if any of you saw this or not, but I wanted to share it
with the group.
Good Morning America had a segment on autism this week. It was a very
emotional piece featuring families dealing with autism. If you go to
the Autism Speaks website (autismspeaks.org) you'll be able to view
the entire documentary that was featured called "Autism Every Day".
The GMA substitute anchor, Bill Wier, said they had all watched it
several times and it was still heart-wrenching to him. I know I had
tears in my eyes.
Just FYI. The Combating Autism bill unanimously passed in the Senate!
Now it goes on to the House for the final vote. You may want to know
that Tom Coburn's office has been telling people that he has not been
is support of the bill, as he believes that autism is already getting
too much funding. I'm not sure how he actually voted, although I'm
going to find out. Congressman Dan Boren returned my e-mail asking
for his support, and told me he is definitely in support of the bill!
Christi
I'm so glad you've joined us! I have tried a variety of supplements
with Landon. Right now he is on Melatonin with B-6 at bedtime, and
glyconutrients from Mannatech. He has made tremendous progress, but I
don't know if it is from the Mannatech or not. I do know that he
doesn't get sick nearly as much as he did before we started the
Mannatech. Also, I feel good that he's getting nutrients, as he is
very limited in his food choices. Mannatech is very expensive, but we
get it through the Mannarelief program. I can't remember the website
address, but if you put in Mannarelief on the search engine it will
come up and then click on the Hope program. We get approx. $800 worth
of supplements for $125 a month. It's a great program. If you go
online there is lots of good information on glyconutrients. I've also
used a Houston Neutraceuticals supplement that breaks down the gluten
and casein. WE ran out of it recently and I threw away the bottle, so
I can't remember the name of it. I haven't noticed a real big
difference though since we stopped it, which makes me wonder if he
really had a gc allergy. Anyway, this was a long-winded response but
I hope it helps.

Hi Kelly. Kim here. Co-moderator with Christi. I hae a son, 11,who is
also severly autistic. I am just venturing into supplements etc. but
I hear very good things. A great place to post your question and get
good feedback would be on

The parents here are terrific and it is geared towards specifics of
dealing with ASD and related issues in the pre-teen and teen years.
Many of these parents have been doing supplements/diets for years so
they have been through the pros and cons of it all. Hope that helps.
I know they can help shed some insight. We are finding good results
with a hit and miss GF... mostly 99% CF diet with Logan. Magnesium is
also good for ASD. I am getting ready to try a new all natural
supplement so I'll keep you posted.

Your welcome. I was really excited when I found out about them, but
put off by their lack of response to the needs of families in this
area.

I wasn't real impressed with them! They refused to come to
Muskogee, even when I offered to line up a number of clients for
them to make it worth their while. At one point I had talked with
them about meeting them in Broken Arrow. The director said she'd
check my insurance and get back with me. She never did and didn't
return my phone calls or e-mails. I mentioned this to someone else
and they said that they are bad about not returning calls.
