Hi, Christi! Hey, great group here. I am Kelly and I am new. I used to live in Perry, Oklahoma, and I moved to Phoenix 4 yrs ago. best move I ever made. Anyway, I have heard about the JD MCcarty center, and it was very good reviews.
My question for anyone here is: does anyone here have their child on vitamin and or herbal supplements? If so, what are they on and how are they doing? I have a 13 yr old that is considered severely autistic, and has Sotos Syndrome, which is on the autism spectrum. Any help here would be appreciated greatly! Kelly

Your welcome. I was really excited when I found out about them, but
put off by their lack of response to the needs of families in this
area.
I looked up the website for the Hali Project. They have lots of
great programs, and I got some good ideas from their website. I'd
like to see the info on them when you get it.

Oh, and about the J.D. McCarty Center. I've heard good things about
them as far as getting a good evaluation and treatment
recommendations. I've heard they are very thorough.

Marty-
I wasn't real impressed with them! They refused to come to
Muskogee, even when I offered to line up a number of clients for
them to make it worth their while. At one point I had talked with
them about meeting them in Broken Arrow. The director said she'd
check my insurance and get back with me. She never did and didn't
return my phone calls or e-mails. I mentioned this to someone else
and they said that they are bad about not returning calls.

Hi, Marty here.
I was wondering if anyone has heard of or had dealings with a place in
Broken Arrow called Four States Rehab...it is a therapy place for
physical, occupational, speech, and behavior therapy...(they do ABA).
and the web site says they can come to your home. anyway, was
wondering if any one has had any dealings with them, wondering if it
would be better than Therapy Works???? Any info would be appreciated.
Their web address is fourstatesrehab.com if you want to check it out.
Also what about the J.D. McCarty Center in Norman, has anyone be
there, or looked into that center?
Thanks,
Marty

Are you in Bville & if so, is your child enrolled at
Will Rogers? The reason I ask is because if so, there
is a wonderful physical therapist there, Jonell
Douglas, who would be a great resource for finding
those items. I dont know of any local stores, but I
know she has magazines & things that she & others have
ordered from. I would go as far as to say that you
could probably call Will Rogers & leave her a message
letting her know what you're looking for & she'd help
you out. Don't think she's working during the summer,
so may have to wait closer to school starting to get
ahold of her.
Hope that helps! Angela

Hi Linzi,
Logan deals with very senstive SI isues too. I can't remember who but
ti was recently suggested to me to try one of the diving schools in
Tulsa as they use some type of weighted vest and sometimes have older
ones they can no longer use. I was told to let them know what I was
looking for and why. I have no idea on cost but, it might be worth
calling one of these places and just asking them if they have anything
along that line. Hope that gets you started.

My son (3yo) is Severely SI dysfunctional. Curious if anyone knows of
any actual stores that carry weighted blankets, vests, or any other
helpful tools. I know of some great places online, but I am always
wary of ordering without seeing. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated!
Hello everyone. My name is Kim Brooks. I live in Bartlesville and am
the facilitator of the Bartlesville Autism support group, which is
now getting underway. We also have the Grand Lakes Autism Support
planning on starting up by the first of August and we hope to have
some newer Yahoo members on this group once they get going.
A quick profile on me. I have 3 boys. My oldest is 22 and NT
(neurotypical), Logan, my middle is 11 and moderate to sever autism,
and my youngest son is 9 and NT. Logan will be going into middle
school so we are dealing with some new changes. I started the
Bartlesville group because there was no active group here where
parents and others could come together to share their experiences and
also get local information. I am very excited about this as we have
some wonderful plans for the future and we also encourage your help
to make this successful.
As a moderator of this group, I just want to remind everyone of a
couple of rules to keep this a friendly place and as safe as possible.
1. No flaming or bashing will be accepted. Keep in mind there are
different perspectives concerning autism. What might work for one
person or family may not work for another but that does not make
something wrong. If a problem arises with this, please let me know so
we can try to resolve it.
2. No SPAM. Selling or promoting products (fundraisers, home parties
etc.) not related to autism will not be allowed. Please understand, I
am a parent involved in school and extra curricular fundraisers too
but, it is best to do these offline. We all get hit with these at
home and work. Again, lets keep this group open for discussions and
fun. What will be ok is if someone asks about a product or food
related to autism and then by all means you can share what you know
about this. Or, you have found something related to autism that works
and just want to share in case someone else wants to research. Just
use good judgment.
Thank you all for your interest and let's keep this going. Encourage
anyone you know in the local area, who deals with anything on the
spectrum, to check us out.
Kim
Hi Kim-
I know of two excellent speech therapists in Bartlesville, you can
email me privately for their names/numbers. I don't know of any
OT's in town. We only used an OT through SoonerStart, and don't
think she'd be available for private practice. You could try
calling the hospital... I know they have OT's, but I am not
personally familiar with them. Hope that helps!
Angela

My experience has been that it is much easier to find a speech
therapist or OT out of Tulsa. There are few in town, and in my
opinion, the one's in Tulsa are, ummm... Well, I prefer Therapists
and Dr's out of Tulsa. My son's OT, Speech, and Physical is all done
through his neuro's office. It's wonderful!!!
Hi everyone!
I am new in Bartlesville. My son is 7 years old and has autism. I would
love recomendations speech and OTs in the area.
Thanks,
Kim

I'd like to hear from other Floor Timers out there. What has it been like for you? What progress have you seen? I once thought if I couldn't give it 20 hours a week, it might not be beneficial, but I'm seeing exactly the opposite. I've been incorporating it into our evening routine and bits and pieces of time on the weekends and I'm astounded at the results we're getting. Landon is much more engaged, eye contact is better, and speech is starting to come forth. I did find out that I expect too little of him. I've started asking things of him that a non-autistic child would be expected to do, not exactly sure what the results would be, and he's surprised me every time. I found that I jumped in much too soon to help him, when he really didn't need my help in most instances.
I'd like to hear from others out there. What have you learned and what progress have you seen? For those who haven't experienced Floor Time yet and would like to learn, we have a video workshop which will be scheduled in the future (very soon for those in Muskogee) and maybe a workshop by a live person too!
My 3yo son is diagnosed Asperger's w/ ADHD,OCD,Anxiety,SDI,w/ a prev.
TBI. I am so glad you started this group. Hopefully a more localized
on-line group will emerge. We had the first support meeting last
month, and it was great, but I've been struggling with my sanity ever
since! lol. Hopefully this will work out to be a wonderful way to
communicate on a more consistant basis with others in similar
situations.
The Special Mother
by Erma Bombeck
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by
social pressures and a couple by habit.
This year nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped
children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children
are chosen?
Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his
instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He
observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.
"Armstrong, Beth; son. Patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to
profanity."
"Forrest, Marjorie; daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia."
"Rutledge, Carrie; twins. Patron saint, Matthew."
Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a
handicapped child."
The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."
"Exactly," smiles God, "Could I give a handicapped child to a mother
who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."
"But has she patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a
sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears
off, she'll handle it."
"I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence
that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm
going to give her has her own world. She has to make her live in her
world and that's not going to be easy."
"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles, "No
matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect -she has just enough
selfishness." The angel gasps - "selfishness? is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child
occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will
bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet,
but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a "spoken
word". She will consider a "step" ordinary. When her child
says "Momma" for the first time, she will be present at a miracle,
and will know it!"
"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance,
cruelty, prejudice....and allow her to rise above them. She will
never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of
her life, because she is doing My work as surely as if she is here
by My side".
"And what about her Patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in
mid-air.
God smiles, "A mirror will suffice."
Welcome to our group. Please tell us about your experiences with
autism. What has your journey been like? What are your concerns for
your child with autism? For his/her siblings? What treatments have
your tried, or are you currently using? What questions do you have
for other members? We look forward to getting to know you and welcome
your input.
