LOL..but really, the sudden horrid smell I have been smelling since i got sick 2
months ago is irritating to say the least.
I got sick 2 mos ago with some kind of mutant flu or something, I was with
SINUS, and bronchial, fever and on ANTI-B 3 different kinds, and still have a
cough somewhat...NOW....after about the first few days of the illness i started
smelling BLEACH, then AMMONIA, and i was looking all over trying to find the
source of the smell, having someone come over to see if they could smell
it...NOPE just a clean house smell...I smelled it at the store, in my house but
not outside.
I was going mad..
Then I started smelling something like a DIRTY WET ASHTRAY/cigarette smoke
smell....I do not smoke, nor do I have anyone or anything in my home that would
smell like that....AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
now I get worried I am smelling smoke running about looking and checking plugs,
cords, appliances, the breaker box, then it goes from smoke smell to wet
cigarette ashtray smell..yuck!
I do not smell it outside however....sometimes I seem to think I taste it
but????,,,,I had a break from this for about a week when I had gotten better,
then a few days ago it started again and have pot nasal drip....I am thinkinh
maybe I have a hidden sinus infection or something, but these horrible
smells.....just gross...

Believe me – this group is awesome – I think you may have posted while everyone was on holiday or vacation. I lost my smell over a year and a half ago and this group is the reason for my sanity! It helped me to realize that I was not going crazy – like I thought I was!
I lived with the horrible distorted smells for a very long time, due to losing my sense of smell. I used Zicam gel swabs during and after suffering from acute bronchitis.
I still, after a year and a half – have some things that don’t smell right, but mostly I just don’t smell. The distorted stage is the worst!! You literally think you are losing your mind.
But, nothing I took or was treated with did anything for my symptoms. I’m sorry to say – but you may have to endure the period with not much relief and let it run it’s course.
Good Luck and keep posting! I promise people are listening and will be your support!

It has been 2 1/2 years for me. Head trauma not illness but those smells sound about right. I do not remember when they finally stopped. They will stop soon. It is horrible when you are going through it though.
Good luck.

Sounds like smell distortion to me - which onset can be due to varied situations. One of which is sinus infection. I stumbled upon this Yahoo group, which has been very helpful for me. Mick's page is also great page for information:

Hi, I have suffered from anosmia for over 9 years now - occasionally alleviated with prescriptions of Prednisolone, typically 30mg for 10 days, but the last two didn't help at all. I had nasal polyps associated with the loss of taste and smell and late onset asthma diagnosed in 2001. Two sinus operations have not helped much. For myself, I think it must be easier to cope with no taste or smell than with distortions. I can appreciate sweet and sour and I try and get some pleasure from the appearance of food and the memories of how I used to enjoy them - especially chocolate. Actually, I found the depression when the steroid effect wore off harder to bear than the affliction. My asthma has been particularly bad over the last few months and I am beginning to find my everyday activities restricted by breathlessness. I have just started seeing a respiratory specialist and hope things will start to improve but no sign yet. Love to you all, Felicity PS I read all the postings with interest even if I don't contribute often

The combination of anosmia
(with polyps) and asthma suggests that Samters Triad is a possibility. Have
your docs mentioned that?

there seems to be a lot of dislike for steroids as a treatment for anosmia - even on this forum!
For sure systemic (oral, injected) steroids will have prolong biological effects in addition to a possible beneficial effect on your taste and smell. The fact that it has worked though means that you have the capability to recover function. Try locally applied steroid drops (in the UK betnesol or Flixonase nasules). If these work you should be able to stay on these for life with minimum side effects (search for my previous posts for my experience with these drugs). If you cannot get these preps then you could try the sprays and with appropriate advice from your doctor consider administering them as a liquid i.e. open the bottle and drip it
into the nose in the inverted head position.
good luck

Your story is a lot like mine. I got a sinus infection and the ability to smell went away. I've had 2 surgerys for polyps and no help. I've taken Prednisone twice. Both over a week or so. During those sessions I could taste and smell like I have never in my life. I went to a clinic here in the US and was prescribed the drug Theophylline. I took it for about 7 months and it didn't help. The Dr. wanted me to come back for some more tests and increase the dosage. He said that if this worked I would have to take it the rest of my life. I didn't like that so i opted out. It has been about 15 years for me. I have given up and accept it. Good luck all

I have had just the same as you. Polyps, deviated septum, allergies, late onset Asthma and even that horrible virus that killed it off for two years. I have had the lot! The doctor said I had lost it for good. I had completely given up hope of getting my smell and taste back until I came across this forum. I was very very depressed.
NOW REMEMBER THIS...If it comes back with Prednisone then your senses are ready and able. Prednisone reduces swelling, and when you take Prednisone then the inflamed tissue way up there in the top of your nose reduces and the smell comes back. Stop taking the Prednisone and it swells back up again and you lose it again. All you need to find is the key that unlocks the door for longer periods and without the risks of long term Prednisone steroid use. I found that with this forums advice and by using Flixonase DROPS not the spray, keeps my world full of taste and smell. Put the drops in by laying on your bed with your head back over the edge and get the flixonase to get right to the back of your nose where its obviously inflamed to the extent that you senses are blocked. Lay there for over a minute then turn over on your front.
Don't forget I was without taste or smell for about 16 years! I had given up all hope.
IT REALLY WORKS!!
Good luck. Ian.

It has been 2 1/2 years for me. Head trauma not illness but those smells sound about right. I do not remember when they finally stopped. They will stop soon. It is horrible when you are going through it though.
Good luck.

I found that with this forums advice and by using Flixonase DROPS not the spray, keeps my world full of taste and
smell.
Good luck. Ian.

I have just started seeing a
respiratory specialist and hope things will start to improve but no sign yet. Love to you all, Felicity PS I read all the postings with interest even if I don't contribute often

I used to visit this forum years ago and the day I came back I see this note
which EXACTLY mirrors my experience. Two sinus operations and a sense of smell
that only returns with oral steroids (prednisone). About a year ago my ENT
perscribed a budesonide/saline nasal rinse. I bought these respules that are
usually used for nebulizers, mixed with saline, and injected up my nose while my
head was inverted (lying over the side of the bed). It had better results than
any spray, but not quite good enough to get my smell all the way back. I'm just
starting another 1-week prednisone pack and I'm going to try and be more
dilligent about the budesonide sinus rinses and see how it goes.
Has anyone tried both fluticasone (Flixonase / Flonase) and compared it to
budesonide (Pulmicort / Rhinocort) and had better luck with one over the other?

Yes I used Rhinocort aqua spray for about a year with some sucsess, then it slowly stopped working.
I was without taste and smell again for a few months until I learnt about flixonase drops. Ever scine then I have been ok. Must be 2-3 years now.

If the steroid works get your doctor to help you find a local steroid preparation that works for you. In the uk we can get drops which work when sprays do not (look at my previous posts for my experiences with this).

I suffered with phantosmia (horrible smells all the time with no rational explanation) for about 1 year. I had head trauma about 6 weeks before the smells started. Saw internists, neurologists, ENT doctors, gastroenterologists..not one could explain the smells and not one could suggest a course of action to eliminate the smells. Finally went to University of Pennsylvania smell and taste clinic...Dr. Richard Doty...Lots of testing...some medical explanation at the end of the day...but the smells went away on their own..no treatment ever really worked.
