Greetings all,
I used to visit this forum years ago and the day I came back I see this note
which EXACTLY mirrors my experience. Two sinus operations and a sense of smell
that only returns with oral steroids (prednisone). About a year ago my ENT
perscribed a budesonide/saline nasal rinse. I bought these respules that are
usually used for nebulizers, mixed with saline, and injected up my nose while my
head was inverted (lying over the side of the bed). It had better results than
any spray, but not quite good enough to get my smell all the way back. I'm just
starting another 1-week prednisone pack and I'm going to try and be more
dilligent about the budesonide sinus rinses and see how it goes.
Has anyone tried both fluticasone (Flixonase / Flonase) and compared it to
budesonide (Pulmicort / Rhinocort) and had better luck with one over the other?

onset Asthma and even that horrible virus that killed it off for two years. I
have had the lot! The doctor said I had lost it for good. I had completely
given up hope of getting my smell and taste back until I came across this forum.
I was very very depressed.

ready and able. Prednisone reduces swelling, and when you take Prednisone then
the inflamed tissue way up there in the top of your nose reduces and the smell
comes back. Stop taking the Prednisone and it swells back up again and you lose
it again. All you need to find is the key that unlocks the door for longer
periods and without the risks of long term Prednisone steroid use.
> I found that with this forums advice and by using Flixonase DROPS not the
spray, keeps my world full of taste and smell. Put the drops in by laying on
your bed with your head back over the edge and get the flixonase to get right to
the back of your nose where its obviously inflamed to the extent that you senses
are blocked. Lay there for over a minute then turn over on your front.

> Your story is a lot like mine. I got a sinus infection and the ability to
smell went away. I've had 2 surgerys for polyps and no help. I've taken
Prednisone twice. Both over a week or so. During those sessions I could taste
and smell like I have never in my life. I went to a clinic here in the US and
was prescribed the drug Theophylline. I took it for about 7 months and it
didn't help. The Dr. wanted me to come back for some more tests and increase
the dosage. He said that if this worked I would have to take it the rest of my
life. I didn't like that so i opted out. It has been about 15 years for me. I
have given up and accept it.

alleviated with prescriptions of Prednisolone, typically 30mg for 10 days, but
the last two didn't help at all. I had nasal polyps associated with the loss of
taste and smell and late onset asthma diagnosed in 2001. Two sinus operations
have not helped much. For myself, I think it must be easier to cope with no
taste or smell than with distortions. I can appreciate sweet and sour and I
try and get some pleasure from the appearance of food and the memories of how I
used to enjoy them - especially chocolate. Actually, I found the depression
when the steroid effect wore off harder to bear than the affliction. My asthma
has been particularly bad over the last few months and I am beginning to find my
everyday activities restricted by breathlessness. I have just started seeing a
respiratory specialist and hope things will start to improve but no sign yet.
Love to you all,
