Sounds like smell distortion to me - which onset can be due to varied situations. One of which is sinus infection. I stumbled upon this Yahoo group, which has been very helpful for me. Mick's page is also great page for information:

It has been 2 1/2 years for me. Head trauma not illness but those smells sound about right. I do not remember when they finally stopped. They will stop soon.
