I'm still here and struggling more lately My complete anosmia is due to a head injury last september. I initially went through some serious grief and then panics about possible fire and gas leaks in my home. I'm better with that but still have very painful moments when I realize that I am walking around with a complete absence of one of my senses and there is a whole realm of experience that I am missing. I got a limeade yesterday and could taste the tartness but no lime flavor at all. I still wear my perfume but can't smell it. I can't smell food or coffee...just pleasurable and comforting things that are gone. Ironically, I work with people who have sustained serious brain injuries and spinal cord injuries/paralysis from falls just like mine....I consciously tell myself I am very lucky to just have anosmia and vertigo...but it is still very difficult I can't know if my sense of smell will ever come back...so I live with a big question mark. I guess this is a pity party but no one really wants to hear this or understands as it is not like having a visible impairment...it's just a sad absence. My best to all.

I'm not aware of anyone thinking that using the pot or Simply Saline, or other such products actually cures parosmia or phantosmia but I've read plenty (elsewhere) of posts from people saying that using the Simply Saline has actually helped them feel much better, and I've also read a few that believe strongly that using the saline was a huge part of their improvement. But note that I did say Simply Saline. I mean that one specifically because it has a long snout that shoots the saline higher into the nasal cavities than moisturizing salines like Ocean or Ayr. I've not heard much, however, about the Neti Pot being particularly successful although for many, it seems to make them feel comfortable in the knowledge that they are cleaning their sinus passages well (and I'm sure it is).
In my case, using the Simply Saline hasn't done much for me other than make me feel I've been fair about cleaning or rinsing out the sinuses. However, I believe those who say it has been helpful for them. It makes complete sense that it would be helpful in some cases.
It's been about a year now for me and I have shown considerable improvement but I seem to have reached a plateau. Sometimes I seem to slip back a bit then improve a bit then slip back a bit. It's much better now than it was a year ago but I'm wondering if I've almost reached the final point of improvement. Even if that's true, though, I'll take the bit of improvement I've had because there are at least more foods I can eat now than I could last year at this time. Last year I honestly figured I'd have to live the rest of my life never tasting anything good again ever, but now I know there are many foods I can handle. I'll accept that but continue to hope for further improvement. There's always hope. I just keep hoping for everyone else to have at least as much improvement as I have had, if not more. It's hard to be patient about getting better when you have no way to know if you even will improve, and I remember vividly how horrible the first six to eight months of parosmia mixed with phantosmia was for me. Every day there's some smell that still reminds me how bad it can get.
