Re: [dysosmia] Other options besides Steroids

lauren,  I lost my sense of smell for over 2 years, nothing worked in the steroids dept. also had polyps removed with no return of olfaction. Then in april of this year had a weeks course of double dose antibiotics for an Hpylori infection in my stomach. 2 days after I completed the course olfaction started returning and I now have it 24/7. I'm pretty sure it cant just be a coincidence. I'll never take it for granted again  Pam

Hi all,

I recently visited UConn's Taste and Smell Center.  This was my first visit to a clinic and I must say I was impressed by the level of testing completed.  It was a pleasure having someone understand my loss of smell...since my only other medical experience was with two local Florida ENTs...both of which had no clue!

Drs. believe a virus damaged the nerve cells...probably about 7 years ago.  On top of that, I have non-allergic rhinitis which causes a lot of inflammation.   I was put on 12 days of steroids, hoping to open up my airways and enable me to smell again.  It did open the airways significantly, so now it is a pleasure to breath properly again...but no luck with the smell.

Drs. suggested I continue with Flonase spray and say perhaps over time I will smell again.

I wondered if anyone that did not do well on the steroids actually had any luck with the Flonase over time?

I also hear Dr. Charles Kimmel in NY does Kenalog injections.  Anyone have any experience with these?

Lauren
