I suggest that you choose your red wine by the grape varieties.
Get a book out of the library and read up on those that taste tannic
and those that don't.
Example.
To me Pinot Noir taste less tannic than Cabernet Sauvignon,
which in turn tastes less tannic than Shiraz/Syrah.
Personally I like the strong tannin wines such as Montepulciano if
I'm eating strong cheesy foods.
But I'll go for the 'lighter' tasting ones like Valpolicella with a
salad.
You can buy a bottle and get a plug with an air pump that sucks the
air out of the bottle until you want another glass. (I use one of
these - a bottle of good red lasts me most of a week).
Or you can get a device that replaces air with CO2.
