It's estimated at about 16%! That means for every 100 students, 84
fail.
Why?
For one, these students enter college ill-prepared and navigate as if
they were still high school, when college and HS are distinctly
different systems with dissimilar demands.
Secondly, since students and their parents don't understand the college
system, they inadvertently make errors in judgment that start a downward
spiral. By the end of two semesters, the result is a low GPA (which can
take MANY semesters to raise) and loss of self-esteem, which leads to
dropping out.
It needn't be this way! My son with LD/ADD made it through college
successfully as a result of my expertise as a college Learning
Specialist. I knew exactly what to look for and just how to find the
right fit.
Essentially, I placed a strong safety net under him. I did not want his
ego battered.
If your teen learns differently, and you fail to set him/her up for
success from day one, it is likely that you will throw your tuition
away.
Our kids are not typical and need more than a tuition check, books, and
backpack to attend in college. They need proper preparation and
knowledge of how to navigate to STAY in college. Getting in is the EASY
part!
I left my job as a Learning Specialist because I felt ineffectual. I
couldn't help the hordes of students requesting services. It is common
for disability offices to be poorly staffed. TRUST ME - I could easily
retire on all the tuition that was wasted from 1993 - 2006.
Until your child understands how the college system works and is willing
to acknowledge her disability, I suggest you save your money.
