Hello all:

Here is our story. My son is 9 yrs. and we have suspected for some time that
he might be dyslexic, but put off doing anything (too bad we did not know
that if you work on it b-4 second grade, they have a much easier time.)
because our son tends to do things later than other kids in his age group.
Now that he is 9 yrs and still spelling at a K level, we decided it had gone
past the "late bloomer" stage. However, I have found it an extreme challenge
to come up with resources to help him. We live in S. Fla. and there is a
waiting list that is around two years long for testing. We have been given
conflicting information regarding testing (told by one resource that there is
no definitive test for dyslexia, that he would be tested for general learning
disabilities), and I have recently found that there are no support groups for
parents of dyslexia to turn to. We homeschool him, although he did attend a
Charter School for most of K and they never even noticed his inability to
read or spell. He basically fell through the cracks because he would behave
and thus the teacher was thrilled with that. In S. Fla. the schools are
soooo overcrowded that the teachers are happy to just get a kid who does not
give them trouble. Right now we are at the stage of trying different things
until we find something that helps. He can now read at his level (thanks to
"Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons") but needs serious help with
spelling. He also hates to write and will exhibit the ADD behavior when I
try to get him to write or do spelling. He excels in math, history, science
and just about every other subject, as long as it does not involve writing or
spelling. We are currently looking at Irlen and AVKO. Oh, and on top of
all this he is Active/Alert.

Blessings,
Amy
