Hello Robin,
Let me start with a little background on my plight try the education
system and dyslexia.
I have two son's, one is 14 and the other is 11. When my 14 year old
entered the first grade he began to have serious problems. He
couldn't keep up, was always "lost." His teacher said he was ADHD.
We took him to four different specialist. They confirmed he was
indeed ADHD. We spent a year in testing and evaluations, but alas all
the experts said it was so they must be right!
I will make a long story short. They were wrong. As I am sure those
of you who are dyslexic or have a child who is dyslexic know these
individuals can be extremely intelligent. Imagine how hard it must be
to know something is just beyond our reach and no matter how hard you
strive you just can't reach it. It's frustrating, infuriating and
embarrassing. How does a young child handle this? They become
withdrawn, disruptive and generally unresponsive.
So that's my first son. My second son enters the second grade, we
begin to have the same problem with him, but now I am smarter and
better educated. I have him tested for dyslexia, he ranked 8 on a
scale from one to ten. Ten was profound, one was mild.
The state of Texas has actual LAWS about dyslexic children. It is
recognized as a medical disability and by law EVERY school ion the
state MUST have a program to educate these children. My son stared in
this program in the third grade. They taught him "decoding" skills.
He is now in the sixth grade and a "A" student.
This is long for one post I am sorry, I end to ramble and I have so
much to say on the subject please forgive the length. Let me know if
this helps. I have copies of the educational code, federal as well as
the state of Texas and Colorado.
Thanks again!
Vickie
