Hi -
I would like to introduce myself, as I am new here. My name is Joan Azarva,
and I am a special ed parent -- except I am "over the hump". I have an
adult son with LD/ADD who graduated college successfully.
I have also worked with students with LD for nearly 35 years, the last 13 of
which were as a college Learning Specialist at Montgomery County Community
College in Blue Bell, PA. I resigned from that position however, in 2006,
frustrated that I was spread far too thin to prevent my students from
failing - this is a common scenario at many colleges.
I don't have to tell you that while students with LD are attending college
in record numbers, their success rate is still dismal as compared to their
peers. This is because high school and college are entirely different
systems. Not only do students arrive at college with many misconceptions,
they are also sorely-ill-prepared; this combination often causes their
demise.
Once I resigned, I made it my mission to help students PROactively than
REactively. I started a FREE e-list to distribute articles, news, tips,
etc on achieving post-secondary success -- please go to
www.conquercollegewithld.com/forum.html and subscribe.
I am passionate about success for this cohort - it's about time our students
received a fair shot at college success.
