Who is Survivors' Poetry?
Survivors' Poetry is a national litrature and perfomance charity. Set up in 1992
by four poets with first-hand exprience of the mental health system, Survivors'
Poetry now comprises a network of of 28 groups and more than 2,000 members
world-wide.
As an organisation, it is dedicated to celebrating the creative expression of
survivors, and to the promotion of poetry by suvivors of mental distress. Funded
by the Arts Council of England, Survivors' Poetry is a user led organisation,
providing workshops, performances,
readings, training courses and publications to the widest possible audience of
survivors, health service providers and arts professionals, with over 95% of
staff, volunteers, trustees and advisors coming from a survivor background.
As a charity, Survivors' Poetry aims to reach all survivors: the one in four who
experience mental health problems at some point in their lives, those who self
define, or identify with our definition, and those who do not define themselves
at all.
In this artistic mission, Survivors' Poetry states its prime purpose as:
"Challenging and changing the social and cutural definitions of poets and
poetry, making connections between creativity and mental health."
