The school my son is in functions as a normal school - a lot of smart kids who
have trouble with reading/writing and language. That is it. They learn using
different tools but do all the things other children do. They do go on lots
more field trips - they learn by doing. They have more time to work on their
strengths ie - art, music etc. We think of it as a small private school that
attends to each child indiviually not a school for dumb child - which they are
not. The teachers really care that these children learn and are expected to
teach these children to be mainstreamed and succeed by 9th grade. - Most do if
they get the remediation they need and deserve by 4th or 5th grade. My son
started in third grade. He was reading at a first grade level at best and is
now in 5th grade and is reading at a 4th grade level. WoW!!!
If you do not like this idea, we have placed my other son who is also a bit
dyslexic at Huntington Learning Center for tutoring with a lot of sucess but it
is after school and he does not like going in his "free time."
You might also want to get your child's school & pleasure books on tape. This
is a service privided by Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic. www.RFBD.com
(.net?). This is a very good service and is free for all people who are blind
or dyslexic. It really takes the pain out of learning. Just relax and listen.
You can purchase the reading program for your computer for $29.00 and then order
the books on CD or you can order tapes. The tape recorder is different than a
normal tape ( I have an old one if you want it - we use the computer CD's only
now.) You might also ask that another student take notes for your child using
carbon paper or make copies of another student's notes. Also, take tests orally
if he fails them the first time.
From a family of successful dyslexics - we have many more ideas if you have any
more questions. Tracee

Thanks for the suggestion!
However, as a counselor, we have no right to send dyslexic children in special
schools.
Could there be other ways I could help him in a regular school set-up?
I have discussed these things to their teachers to avoid him being labeled dumb
or stupid. We have also given him special provisions in certain subject areas.
Is there anything else I could do?
This group is indeed helpful for me. I hope all of us stay connected.
Thanks Tracee and Simon
