Sally Shaywitz, M.D. is the author of "Overcoming Dyslexia". It is a great
book. And I am a teacher, Ph.D. student and I have dyslexia. So I see it from
many different angles. Being a teacher of students with disabilities, you can
mention to the parents that their child needs extra help, then recommend doctors
that could diagnose their child. Do not let this child not get diagnosed. You
might be hindering them from their potential. Good Luck. I know that you have
a fine line to walk.

The definition states that dyslexia is neurological in origin and that dyslexics
process information differently in their brains than do non-dyslexics.
Dyslexia is a condition, not a disease. But yes, it is a medical condition.
Also the new book by someone named Shayvitz (sp) called "Overcoming Dyslexia"
carefully goes through the most recent research that pinpoints dyslexia as a
medical condition.

Subject: [Dyslexia Club] Is dyslexia a medical condition?
I sat in a meeting today trying to figure out how to serve a child
that is obviously dyslexic. I have no difficulty identifying his
problems to be dyslexia due to numerous college classes and Orton
Training. I do realize I can't identify him and recommended to a
parent that she seek professional identification. The team that I
was a member of said that Dyslexia is NOT a medical condition.
Please help settle this dispute. Is dyslexia a medical condition?
If so, please forward any literature or sites that simply state this
fact. If I am wrong, then I must go back to and educate myself.
