Kyla,
My son is 11 years old and I pulled him out of public school two years ago and
began homeschooling. He has all of the symptoms you listed that your son has.
He was tested by the school psychologist in 3rd grade. Results were average IQ
and NO learning disability. A few months later, we took him to see a
psychologist and the Dr. wanted to try medication for ADD. We never took him
back there again.
He continues to struggle even though we are homeschooling. He writes like a 1st
grader, spells most words phonetically, and still hasn't memorized his
multiplication facts. His reading has improved quite a bit in the last two
years, but he's still below level.
Last month, we took him to Dyslexia Institute of America and had him evaluated.
Results were Dyseidetic Dyslexia. They offer therapy, but it's expensive and a
long process (up to three years). We ordered the Davis Symbol Mastery Kit and
received it about a week ago. After one week of using it, his reading seems
smoother and he is reading with comprehension and feeling! He never read with
feeling before. It was always monotone. I am impressed so far, but feel it is
a bit early to come to any conclusions.
Hope this helps,
Angel
