Hi, all! So glad to have found this group, hopefully I'll be able to
gain some valuable insight. I have a 12 y.o. son that is starting
7th grade on Tuesday. Already, I'm stressing out! Ever since 2nd
grade, school has been a source of tears and frustration for both of
us. My son has always had problems in school...we had him tested in
4th grade for LD BUT the school who administered it says that he just
has a low IQ. The low IQ was determined by using the Wechsler
Intelligence Scale, but the information I read states that it is
dependent on the child's cumulative education background. The test
determined that his verbal comprehension skills are limited and he
has a low ability to process and organize what he perceives. HOWEVER,
when I work with him at home here are the problems I notice and only
I would notice because he's never had a teacher that's had the time
to spend with him to know what the issues are. Here's what I see:
1) His reading isn't "smooth"
2) He ignores punctuation and leaves out words
3) He gets tired and breathless after reading a few passages
4) Has problems with advanced reading comprehension (ie longer
passages or questions whose answers aren't derived from a sentence in
the passage)
5) Spelling, grammar and punctuation are awful
6) Doesn't properly space words when writing
7) Has yet to memorize multiplcation tables (we've been working on
this for 5 years and he still doesn't know them by heart)
8) Extremely unorganized
Anyway, what do you all think? I'm considering having him tested by
a psychologist. He's already seen one and when I showed the LD test
to him, the dr. said he's just not smart. But, with all the
tutoring, "remediation" in school and my help I don't understand why
he's still flunking every class! I still believe there is something
more going on than the fact that my son is just of low intelligence.
Ugh! Any advice? Thanks! and sorry for such a long post. Kyla
