RE: [Dyslexia Club] Inquiry about schools

CS,
Are you familiar with the website www.ldonline.com. There is a section
called Finding Help, and under that there is LD Schools. Once you find a
school in a state that you think might work for you, you can go to the
Bulletin Board and post a comment for referrals.

Penny

Richard,
I appreciate your opinion. And I too am fed up with the public
school system. We are currently suing the school my son has
attended. He has been bullied so badly. Head put through a glass
food display case 4/29/2, urine soaked paper towels thrown at him,
bleach thrown at him, assaulted several times... of course the
teachers never see this stuff.. how convenient for them!!
But I have enough proof for a Yale educated Lawyer to take the case!!
My son has been in counseling since 8/2 for PTSD. I often think the
parents and teachers should be thanking me for being a good parent
and not making my son deal with this stuff alone.

In the meantime, as I said.. in the midst of all this .. my son
managed to maintain an A/B average!! They would read the text to him
for tests and at home we would do his writing homework. I have asked
the school to address this issue for years. They told me he was on
a 5/6 grade reading level. He is entering grade 9 next year. We had
him independently tested.. his scores were below 1st grade!! This was
depressing for him, so I did a google search for famous dyslexic
people. This helped him a lot. His intelligence level is evident by
the fact that he can score so highly on tests. He draws on what he
has stored in his memory, experiences, etc.

My son wants to be a pilot, aviation engineer, or an auto engineer.
I don't want to fail him as a parent. Please if anyone knows of any
schools that are willing to work hard to teach a dylexic to read and
not just hand him a cane for the rest of his life.. let me know!!

Sunday, a friend in Sunday school shared with me that their niece who
entered high school in special ed with dyslexia graduated with high
honors this year. The school is in Georgia. If we need to move
there we will, although Georgia is not my first choice. We also need
to try to be somewhere that has an excellent veterans hospital for my
husband. He is a vietnam/gulf war veteran and is ill from exposure
to chemicals in the 1991 Gulf War.

Thanks,
CS
