There are 8 presentations and one discussion workshop on dysferlin in
the program for the upcoming Internatioal Congress on Neuromuscular
Diseases in July 2002. (one of them is co-authored by group member
Daniel MacArthur). I've listed them on the dysferlin website:
http://www.dysferlin.org/research.htm#mws2001
Also, Eric Hoffman's group recently made a conference presentation on
research currently underway using a "gene chip" to study the
pathological effects of dysferlin deficiency. A number of genes whose
expression changed in dysferlin deficiency are not significantly
changed in Duchenne MD or alpha-sarcoglycan deficiency. The goal of
this project is to shed light on the role of dysferlin, and why its
absence causes muscle pathology. A link to the abstract is included
on the page linked above.
Although this research might not have any immediate implications for
patients, the number of research groups giving presentations on this
topic is, in my view, a very positive sign.
