Hello all, :)
Hope you're doing well.
Someone asked me about the decrypton, so I thought you might be
interested too. This is my 2 cents about it:
In France we have the equivalent of MDA called AFM Association
Française pour les myopathies which supports the muscular
dystrophy
research in France with the Telethon.
If one of you is interested I've attached the link to AFM website,
there's an english version of the webpage.
http://www.afm-france.org/
A word about the décrypton,
I know it quite well because ...I was one of the "internaute,
greeding computer user" who took part of it!( yep!)
What is decrypthon?(I can only tell you what I understand from my pov)
It's a project aimed at creating a data bank of all the proteins
known is our living world ( insects, animals, human, bacteries etc..)
the proteome ( more 500 000 reported proteins)
That will allow to map, and to compare all thoses proteins between
the different species in order to comprehend their respective
functions.
Indeed, most of the genetic diseases ares caused by a protein
deficiency, mutation, dysregulation, controled by a genetic mutation
in the genome.
If paradoxically, reseachers could find what genes are involved in
which chromosome and what thoses genes are responsible for such or
such protein synthesis,
most functions or these ones, in vivo ( in our body living) are
misknown or unknown.
One way to study the function of the protein is to compare them to
other similar proteins
which exists in other species more simple to study than the complexe
human body ( we are really a maze-deadalus, us human!)
Hence, if researchers could understand what role a deficient protein
has, then they would understand the disease mecanism at body level
and genomic level . so this knowledge would lead to
find potential healing treatements.
Here's the last official update from AFM, the informatic calculation
phase has been now over for a couple of week, and the data bank
should ( if no problem) be availble for all reseachers,
free for all research community among the world, this autumn.
Ps in practice, what I was asked to do, as many others french
computer users in France,
is lending a little part of my personnal computer capacity to help
for the calculation while I didn't use it. Then, the result of my
partiel task is sent to the" mother data bank" via internet connection
That is called greeding computing system, where a numerous datas can
be processed faster, as they are shared beetween a lot of machines,
eache of them calculting its own parts,
than a super computer alone
I hope theses datas will facilitate the reseachers's work though
there is a lot of work to achieve...so wait and see,
But we shall stay tune.
A+
