My daughter has just received a date for her operation. She's not having MMR or
VRT, it's more of an exploratory op to really see what's going on with her eye.
The Dr is not 100% its Duane's. She will also be receiving botox.
The date has unfortunately clashed with a house move later that week. The op's
on the Tuesday and we're moving on the Friday. I'm in two minds on whether to
reschedule the operation date. My daughter has just turned 1. Do they bounce
back from the operations fairly quickly?
I had my operation on Tuesday and was sighting at the San Diego Zoo on that
Thursday, back at work by the next Monday. As long as she doesn't have to do the
moving (as I'm sure a 1 year old won't) she should be fine.

Four years ago I had MMR on a Thursday, and was back to work on Monday. I only had the patch on for a day. 2 days after the surgery I was fine. And that was surgery, which I would think would be more involved than exploratory surgery.

Ditto for us. Emily had both her operations on a Tuesday and was back in school on the Thursday. You have to be careful to keep the eye clean - no playing in the sand pit or similar, and no swimming for about a month. Eye drops, if I remember rightly, 4 times a day for the first week or so, and then slighlty less frequently.
Recovery form the operation shouldn't be a problem. However, you may well be asked to attend the eye clinic a couple of days after the operation for a post op check, and I think these post op checks were normally on the Friday after the operation (it may have been Thursday - it was a long time ago!).
You might want to check this out. You may however be able to get an post op follow up appointment on a different day so it might not be a problem. If your experience is anything like ours, you'll probably get some feedback after the operation anyway as the Surgeon does a ward round to talk to the parents when as soon as finished his list for the day.
Let me know if you need any more info. Good luck with both the operation and the move.

thanks Carol. I really please with Mr Watts, I felt very safe in his hands. On the letter it says no food or drink for 6 hours before the operation. Do they tend to do children's procedure 1st thing? Matilda loves her food and get very grumpy if she doesn't get her milk first thing. The thought of making her wait for hours with out food or milk is worst than the thought of the operation at the moment! How do you distract a hungry toddler!

Things may well have changed since our experience was over 5 years ago, but at the time the operations were done in the afternoon (starting at 1pm I think) with the youngest child first.
Emily was actually treated an in patient for both her operations. We had to go to the hospital around lunchtime on the Monday. She was then shown to her bed and we had to wait around her to have some quick medical checks (weight, breathing, heart beat etc), see the anaesthetist, and consultant. We were told at this time where she was on next day’s operating lists (I think he does about 4 a day).We were then allowed home and told to be report back mid morning on the Tuesday. We were also told that she wasn’t allowed food after about 7a.m but she would be allowed water until about 10 a.m.We were advised to give her an early breakfast.
Like Matilda, Emily liked her food as lot (and still does!), and I was dreading the thought of her asking food or drink, but in the event it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought. We made sure that we didn’t eat or drink in front of her, and took her to the play room when we heard the food trolley coming round. We also got her a couple of new toys that we brought out mid morning.Emily was, of course older that Matilda, so it may have been a bit easier.
She was 1st on the list when she had the vrt, but last when she had the botox. On the botox day, I think all the patients were having botox, and the others were babies.I don’t recollect them crying too much or sounding too distressed out of hunger before the operations.
Try to not to worry too much, the pre operation worrying is far worse than the actual thing!
