Dear Readers,
The original of my previously posted "Notable mention", in digest 1392,
contained thoughtless content, to which I gaveinadequate consideration
before editing and posting. I have thereby repeated someone else's careless
remarks. I was so focused on the DU material in the article that dismissive
and diminishing text went un-noticed by me.
No offence was intended. I am aware that Islam is very comprehensive in its
approach to graven images and the portrayal of the Prophets, compared to
other religions. The religious insight which is exemplified by refusal to
portray images of the Prophets is lost on many people. I regret that my
previous post does not reflect or consider such insight. Kindly accept this
post as an apology for my thoughtless behaviour.
The item below, excerpted from Wikipedia, is intended to place my limited
understanding in a wider context.

In Christianity
[edit]Byzantine iconoclasm
Main article: Byzantine iconoclasm
There were two periods of iconoclasm, or icon-destruction, in the Byzantine
Empire, in the mid eighth and early ninth centuries. The political aspects
of the conflicts are complex, dealing with the relationship between the
Byzantine Emperors, the Orthodox Church councils, and the Pope.
Theologically, the debate, as with most in Orthodox theology at the time,
revolved around the dual nature of Jesus. It was believed that icons could
not represent both the divine and the human natures of the Messiah at the
same time, but separately. As an icon which depicted Jesus as purely
physical would be Nestorianism, and one which showed Him as both human and
divine would not be able to do so without confusing the two natures into one
mixed nature, which was Monophysitism, all icons were thus heretical.
Reference was also made to the prohibitions on the worship of graven images
in the Mosaic Law.
[edit]During the Protestant Reformation
Aniconism was also prevalent during the Protestant Reformation, when more
fundamentalist Protestant sects began to preach rejection of what they
perceived as a hedonistic and vain Catholic Church which filled its churches
with relics at the expense of impoverishing entire regions of
Europe.[citation needed] Certain sects (most notably the Puritans and some
sects of the Baptist churches) began to prohibit the display of religious
figures particularly icons. A famous example of this comes from Oliver
Cromwell, ouster of King Charles I, who once destroyed a golden relic placed
in his church.
[edit]Among some Christians today
The Amish continue to avoid photographs or any depictions of people; their
children's dolls usually have blank faces.[4]
[edit]In Islam
[edit]Theological views
The Qur'an, the Islamic holy book, does not explicitly prohibit the
depiction of human figures; it merely condemns idolatry (ex.: 5:92 [1],
21:52 [2]). Interdictions of figurative representation are present in the
Hadith, among a dozen of the the hadith recorded during the latter part of
the period when they were being written down. Because these hadith are tied
to particular events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad, they need to be
interpreted in order to be applied in any general manner.

Hi folks, DU-Watch gets a mention from Ian Frazer, of the South African
Mail and Guardian, Online.
Have a look at the fas site - while there is a limited spectrum of links
available, the text of the DU item is demonstrably one-sided.
cheers,

As the United States and its oil-hungry allies keep talking about weapons of
mass destruction (WMDs), it should be pointed out that they themselves are
using WMDs. Of course they call it "depleted" uranium or "DU". (This means
semantically pretty much the same as saying "not so deadly" cyanide.) It's a
radioactive weapon of mass destruction. Browse through info at Depleted
Uranium Watch and pause by the Campaign against Depleted Uranium. Then look
over some BBC links.
Naturally there's an opposing view -- read Military Analysis Network. [fas]

Depleted Uranium
In military applications, when alloyed, Depleted Uranium [DU] is ideal for
use in armor penetrators. These solid metal projectiles have the speed, mass
and physical properties to perform exceptionally well against armored
targets. DU provides a substantial performance advantage, well above other
competing materials. This allows DU penetrators to defeat an armored target
at a significantly greater distance. Also, DU's density and physical
properties make it ideal for use as armor plate. DU has been used in weapon
systems for many years in both applications.
Depleted uranium results from the enriching of natural uranium for use in
nuclear reactors. Natural uranium is a slightly radioactive metal that is
present in most rocks and soils as well as in many rivers and sea water.
Natural uranium consists primarily of a mixture of two isotopes (forms) of
uranium, Uranium-235 (U235) and Uranium-238 (U238), in the proportion of
about 0.7 and 99.3 percent, respectively. Nuclear reactors require U235 to
produce energy, therefore, the natural uranium has to be enriched to obtain
the isotope U235 by removing a large part of the U238. Uranium-238 becomes
DU, which is 0.7 times as radioactive as natural uranium. Since DU has a
half-life of 4.5 billion years, there is very little decay of those DU
materials.
