Action on hill last night Defense Approprs Bill House   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #861 of 947 |

Last night late House Defense Appropriations with a manager's amendment for
Peer Review Research for gulf war illness for (7.5m) less than the requested
amount of 30 million was past.

ALS requested 4.8mil and got 1.5m per testimony of Congressman Brown (SC)
which would be for a national ALS Registry(General Mikolajcik) per House
VA-Hearing Subcommittee Hearing of July 26th. MS Society had requested 15million,
as far as I can find out from sources...that was not funded. Parkinson
Disease was also requesting funds and again I have not found out the amount they
received in this bill but they have gotten something.

Listen to the Hearing and review the testimony of witnesses at:
Subcommittee on Health Hearing
Gulf War Exposures
DATE/TIME/PLACE: July 26
(Thursday) 10:00 am, 334 Cannon

We had asked for 30 million for Congressionally Directed Medical Research
Defense because that was historically what we were receiving prior to 911 when
this area was zeroed out. In 05 appropriations bill we got 5 million for FY
06 funds. Which process started in February of this year with CDMRP process
after call for letters of intent in Nov-Dec 06 resulted in 80 submissions
that then led to 31 proposals reviewed in April 07. Those projects have now
been announced.

What is next? The Senate will deal with Defense
Appropriations/Authorizations when they return and a conference committee will deal with any differences
between House and Senate versions by October. There is a chance that an
omnibus bill will happen as they run closer to October deadlines. Those of us
that have actively worked this issue by trips to DC and house and senate
meetings will keep our eye on the ball.

That you can do is speak to your Senators and your Representatives while
they are home in August. We need continued support from all as we move forward
into final bill.

Here is the action from last night. It is interesting and educational to
see the earmarks that made it through to be passed to the Senate. That is why
I am including the reference to the House journal. It is good to be informed
as you go forth to talk to your elected representatives and senators.

Sincerely,
Denise _DSNurse@aol.com_ (mailto:DSNurse@aol.com)
