After about two years of struggling, I finally suceeded in having my fed student loan discharged due to being a 100% p & T disabled vet. If you are in a similar situation ahd have a student loan obligation, you might also be eligible for this, but no one will tell you about it. I found out by chance during a conversation with one of their reps when I happened to ask the right question. For a long time after that, it seemed like the process was about proving my disability. Even tho 2 VA shrinks signed the paper, the student loan guys insisted on talking to the shrinks, and it took a lot to expidite that process. But just when I thought I was right at the end and the student loan committee finally accepted that I am disabled, seemingly out of the blue I got hit with a demand from the student loans guys to submit proof (income tax records) of my lack of income for the three years after my disability began. This was a tricky hurdle because my VA counselor and I agreed I became disabled totally quite a while before I found about about VA counslling and took advantage of it. As a result, the date we put on my form for the "beginning" of my permananet disability was somewhat arbitrary and a best guess.
If you are ever subjected to this process you will have to prove that beginning the year you said you became disabled, that your income was at no time over the federal poverty standards for your area. Personally, I think this is a technicality to try to avoid giving vets discharges of loans they are legally entitled to have discharged, and that's why I'm writing all this, to for warm you all who may partake in this process. If anyone wants more information about the loan discharge process and requirements, I'd be happy to share my experiences and what I have learned about the process. I'm not a vet advocate or anything, and my knowledge is limited to my personal experience, but I'm willing to share if it will help anyone.
