WASHINGTON Residents at a historic retirement home for war veterans are accusing the Pentagon of violating the law by making harmful cutbacks in medical services.
The Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington was established in 1851. A draft complaint says its nearly one-thousand residents are being harmed by efforts to balance its budget. The suit is to be filed in federal court. Spokesman Homer Rutherford says residents aren't whining, but just "want to live." He says cutbacks include the closing of the home's main clinic -- and elimination of X-ray and electrocardiogram services. A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment. Copyright 2005 Associated Press.
