Hi Alan,
What day is your surgery? We might be there at the same time and it would be
good to know someone. Karen

Keep a protein shake with you wherever you go, too - even though it's liquid, it also makes you feel more "full" than other liquids.

Hi gang,
My surgery is in just under two weeks, ergo: the diet has begun. I am only on day two and it is driving me a little nuts.
Does anyone have any suggestions or comments regarding there experience?

Hi Alan - if you're on the same full liquid diet, that includes yogurt - I loved getting nonfat plain greek yogurt and adding flavorings to it, like sugar free jelly (not much - lots of calories in jelly) - greek yogurt was more filling than regular.
Hang in there - it actually gets easier!

Hello. I am just about to hit my 3 year surgeversary! And I don't post often but saw your request for input from folks who are no longer newbies so though I'd chime in. Of course Jane can give great insight too - she really helped me when I was deciding what to do.
Anyway, my initial weight loss was about 85 pounds which I lost over a year. I have gained back about 15 over the past two years but I blame that on my food choices and stretching my stomach by not following all if the guidance given versus the sleeve itself. At first that worried me and I felt angry at myself but I think my current weight is a good one for me and my frame (5'4" and 130 lbs) so I focus on feeling healthy rather than the digits. (Which are lower than they were when I was 16.)
Anyway, I am extremely happy with my decision to have the sleeve. My complications were non existant and my life is going just as I had
dreamed it would post surgery. I do things I never thought I would (like power yoga) and married the man of my dreams in August. I believe it was always in my ti live my fullest life but it took a truer physical self for me to get there.... Oh yea, and I did lots of strength training and talk therapy over the first year and I think that helped a lot. Try to really sculp you body as you loose weight if you can. It will tighten your skin and reveal a healthier you that much faster.
Best of luck in your decision! It has changed my life!!

Would be interested in hearing from folks about long term results - specifically continued weight reduction (or not) and returned hunger - at years 1, 3, 5 and 10.
Anyone with anything to share would be surely appreciated as I try to make a decision between the sleeve and RNY. Thanks.
Hi everyone,
I'm doing great. Just a little sore around my incision sites, but other than
that, I feel totally fine. The runs I had went away after about 24 hours. I'm
starting to get bored with clear liquids. I'm looking forward to moving on to
full liquids soon.
Thanks to everyone for your support & feedback!!

I asked Dr. Joya if watermelon juice was considered "clear liquid". He said yes. However, they didn't have it at the hotel this morning. I'm hoping that maybe tomorrow they'll have it, cause I'd love some of that!
I'm feeling pretty good. I took a taxi downtown today and did a tiny bit of shopping.
I had a bit of the runs tonight, but I don't know if that was from the surgery or from putting ice into my drinks today. I think I'll stay away from the ice tomorrow, just to be on the safe side. I go home tomorrow. I'm looking forward to being back in my own place, and getting back to my adorable french bulldog.

The runs seem to be very normal for the first couple of weeks.. Not to worry. It passes.... it's because of just being only on liquids.
I wish I knew the Spanish word for watermelon. It also might be passed the watermelon season.

from the airport ! No problems. Ask Dr. Joya about it.

Congratulations. I'll enjoy a sip of water for you. ;).... when you go to the
Krystal ask if they have watermelon juice, or just look for it at the beverage
area of the buffet restaurant.Â

I had my surgery yesterday. Dr. Joya was great. I now have the sleeve!!
There was some question about whether I'd be able to have the sleeve because of former lapband, but he was able to do it.
My hotel room at the Cornerstone Hospital. I have a big room with a flat screen TV to watch.
There are plenty of english channels to choose from. And they have free WiFi in the rooms.
And the Krystal hotel is also great. Large room. Flat screen TV. Free WiFi in room.
Beautiful tropical surroundings and warm/welcoming/ helpful staff everywhere I've been.
I'm feeling pretty well. Just the normal pain post surgery. Stomach area hurts. Shoulder is sore from air/gas traveling up from surgery. Scratchy throat from tube down my throat in surgery. But that's all normal. And supposedly, everything will be a lot better starting tomorrow.
My throat is dry, and I'm so very much looking forward to tomorrow, when I can have some ice chips, and hopefully some water. Then move on to clear liquids.
And coming alone to Puerto Vallarta hasn't been a problem. It's really no big deal being here alone. I feel totally safe here alone.
Have you had a chance to talk with anyone yet and would you still like me to call you ? By the way... what is your name? .... I'm sure it isn't iPhone. lol

Hi Jane,
Thank you so much for your advice. I just told my boyfriend I wanted to do this & he isn't on board at all. I would love to speak with you, maybe tomorrow at 214-679-7396.
I had my surgery 3 years ago and have lost 85 lbs. it sometimes goes up and down a few pounds depending on what is going on and how diligent I am about my food. I would like to lose another 20 lbs, but am ok with where I am. I mostly wear a size 14 now.. down from a 24 -26. Whoo hooo... yes I can live with a size 14.
I've had not a single complication and drove myself home from the airport, when I got back to Portland. I was only taking Ibuprofen for pain at that point. Using the wheelchair services on your way home is an excellent plan and it gets you wheeled through customs much faster. .... however, my friend was coming home from Costa Rica after major plastic surgery and there was no help for her for about 3 hours.. that's how long she had to wait for a wheelchair. It pays to ask well ahead of time that you need a wheelchair.
You can email me at thebabyjane@aol.com and I would be glad to give you my phone number and we can chat.

No - I had no complications at all. Of course, with surgery, your insides have been re-arranged and cut up, so you experience some pain (kind of minimal). Also gas pain from the CO2 they pump into your abdomen so they can see in there - it can sometimes take a couple weeks to completely go away - it was the gas pain that caused me the most discomfort - but to me it was discomfort, not horrible.
My surgery was on Tuesday - by Friday, I was in an Italian place in downtown Puerto Vallarta with new friends singing karaoke :)
I've had no complications since then.

I'm sure watermelon juice would fit in the clear liquids category. The point is not to have something thick or with "stuff" in it, so it doesn't aggravate your newly created VSG (I had that surgery as well and I couldn't be happier!)

they have apple juice at the outdoor restaurant too - oddly, the watermelon tasted too sweet for me, though I remember the recommendation - strange how our tastes are just after surgery - all I could stand was apple juice and chicken consume :)

Hi Jane,
Thank you so much for your advice.
Blessings,
Jane

I only have about 50 lb to lose & am aittle con erned I would lose too much weight.
First, every single person is different, and every person loses differently. It depends on what size you are when you start, metabolic issues, and a host of other things. That said, I have lost 45 lbs in 4 months. That is actually less than most people lose, but I"m okay with that, as I had some pretty sucky metabolic issues before surgery, and still do - at least now I CAN lose.
The average is all over the place - everyone is different - but if you follow the plan closely, including learning to change eating habits and exercise, you will lose.

May I be the first, maybe second, to welcome you to the loser's bench. Congratulations. I'll enjoy a sip of water for you. ;).... when you go to the Krystal ask if they have watermelon juice, or just look for it at the beverage area of the buffet restaurant.
Blessings,
Jane

I had my surgery yesterday. Dr. Joya was great. I now have the sleeve!! There was some question about whether I'd be able to have the sleeve because of former lapband, but he was able to do it.
My hotel room at the Cornerstone Hospital. I have a big room with a flat screen TV to watch. There are plenty of english channels to choose from. And they have free WiFi in the rooms.
And the Krystal hotel is also great. Large room. Flat screen TV. Free WiFi in room. Beautiful tropical surroundings and warm/welcoming/helpful staff everywhere I've been.
