I arrived in Mexico on Sunday, had surgery on Monday, went back to the hotel on Wed, flew home on Sat morning.
So, 6 days total. I loved Puerto Vallarta, but hurt way too bad to enjoy it. I was ready to go home.
I had one complication during surgery. My liver was enlarged and it was accidentally cut while they were trying to move it out of the way to get to my stomach. This was because I didnt follow the pre-op diet 100%. Big mistake on my part, but it was too late to change that.
So I encourage everyone to stick to that diet.
Recovery was slow for me because I have so many other health problems. Im a very slow healer due to my Diabetes and Obesity. It probably took me a month before I felt like doing much. I had 8 incisions (small ones - laparascopic) and 20 stitches. I left them in for the customary 10 days and then removed them. 2 of them were not healed and popped open. They took much longer to heal and drained alot. There never was any infection, thankfully. I kept a close eye on them. Thank goodness I am a nurse, along with my husband. He took care of me mostly.
It was really hard on me...some people dont have such a hard time...lucky dogs lol
However, I would do it all over again if I had to..
=)

How long did you need to stay in Mexico? How was your recovery? Did you have any complications?

Hello! I had the Sleeve with Dr. Joya March 17, 2008. Yes, I would do it all over again. Its been a hard road for me at times, but I have lost 90 lbs and feel great most days. I have a long way to go from here. I had a really high BMI when I started. Most doctors wouldnt touch me until I lost alot of weight beforehand. Dr. Joya did! He is a really good doctor, very nice, polite, and caring. I couldnt have asked for a better group taking care of me. I am a nurse and in the States, you sometimes dont get that great of care...too many patients, too much red tape, and too little time. But I got great care with Dr. Joya and have recommended him to others.

Hi there... My name is Rabecca and I had the DS in 2001. My husband would also like to have WLS, but we can't afford to go back to Dr B in Spain due to the weak US dollar. We are considering Mexico instead, and he is very interested in the sleave.
Can you tell me a bit about Dr Joya?
Have you had the sleave?
Would you choose that surgery again and why?
How long do you need to stay near the hospital after surgery?
How is the followup care?
I am looking for any information you can give me, as we want to make a well informed decision. You can email us privately if you wish at rabeccawhalen @verizon.net (you will need to take out the space). Thank you in advance!!!
