THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED BY THIS GROUP SHOULD NOT BE CONSTRUED AS MEDICAL, LEGAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL ADVICE. THEY ARE ONLY PRIVATE OPINIONS.
This is a group for former Alcoholics Anonymous members (AA's) who have returned to social drinking. Membership is restricted and subject to moderator approval. For membership, state briefly why you wish to join, and that you have completely READ THIS HOME PAGE. Also, to protect your privacy, use/create a Yahoo email under a pseudonym.
A short version of our position on drinking is:
- DO NOT RESUME DRINKING, if you’re sober (abstinent) now,
- If you’ve returned to problem-free drinking, we provide encouragement to
keep your drinking problem-free.
- If your return to drinking is causing problems, at the very least practice harm reduction, but accept that a return to abstinence is the rational choice.
- NEVER, EVER, DRINK AND DRIVE.
Other Yahoo groups of ex-AA's are about maintaining abstinence while dealing with bad 12 Step experiences. There's also Moderation Management, problem drinkers practicing moderation, but most never were in AA. Our new situation is unique and, indeed, "baffling," but we can't talk to our AA friends without eliciting alarmist responses.
Some issues we deal with:
*Were we really merely "problem drinkers" due to immaturity or circumstance?
*Were we fools to spend so much time "in the program?" Or, are we kidding ourselves now?
*How can we maintain problem-free drinking?
*Could program dogma take hold once again and force us to play out a "slip script?"
*How do we deal with being separated from something that was such a big part of our lives?
*Are there problems underlying our drinking that still need to be addressed?
*If moderation isn't working, how to face the fact rationally, without self-downing, and return to abstinence.
