Well tomorrow is 2 weeks post op and I am going to see Dr. Fox
tomorrow. I have lost 13 1/2 pounds in the past 13 days. I have lost
29 1/2 poinds since I started my pre-op diet. I am anxious to find
out my next step in this whole process and to schedule my first fill.
I hope I get the OK to go swimming as I miss it so much! Would love
to hear how everyone else is doing!
Congratulations on the 72 pounds; you are
right, that is GREAT! I’m sure you feel like a different person and
can do so many things that you couldn’t do at your heaviest. I know
that is true for me. It makes sense that you have hit a plateau and there
are several things you can do. I would be conscious of how much protein
and water you are getting in every day. If you’re getting the
minimum of each then that is great. You may need to up your exercise
too. I now work out 5 times a week for an hour each session. I also
change up my routine because our bodies get used to doing one thing and then
won’t let go of the weight/fat until we challenge it up some. I don’t
focus on a specific diet, I just eat what I want and try to focus on protein
first. For most of my second year of banding I was consuming alcohol on a
regular basis. I know that is one reason my weight didn’t move down
steadily during that time. There is no doubt in my mind that I could be
at my goal weight by now if I had done things differently this past year.
I recently decided to cut alcohol out completely for a while to help me start
losing again. One other thing I can share with you is a “Plateau
busting diet” that was posted years ago. It’s says it’s
Dr. Fox’s diet and I printed it off and showed it to our Dr. Fox and he said it wasn’t
his but he thought it was a great plan. I’ve pasted it below.
I hope some of this helps and please don’t be hard on yourself or feel
like you’re alone in this because we all hit plateaus at some
point. Take care.

on this posting that you had your surgery in 6/06. have you hit a
plateau? where you are not losing any weight or either you go up and

I just passed my 2 year bandiversary; it
was 6/30/05. I lost about 65 pounds really quickly and the rest has been much
slower and more difficult to get off. I had to add in regular exercise at the
gym and really watch my portion size. I also was drinking lots of alcohol the
last year or so and we all know that is just empty calories. I have since
stopped drinking and will do that for the foreseeable future.
I remember that in the beginning it was
hard to get the protein shake down. Now I use New Whey protein drinks that are
premixed and give you 25 g. of protein in only 3 oz. of liquid. I buy them
online from www.bulknutrition.com to get a better price, but they can be
purchased at The Vitamin Shoppe too. I wish I would have known about them
before surgery because I could barely get down the thick shake I made with
milk/water and ice in the blender so I rarely got in all my protein those first
several weeks post-op. You might want to give them a try. They also come in
42 g. of protein but I’ve been told by a nurse that our bodies can’t
absorb more than 25 g. at a given time, so the 42 g. seems like a waste to me.
You sound like you have a great attitude
and that will help you so much in this process. Take care and I look forward
to watching your progress.

Hi Rosy,
My srugery was actually on the 18th sorry for the confusion. I (knock
on wood) haven't had any pain in the shoulder. I have a bit in the
back between my shoulder blades, but using a heating pad works great.
Pretty much gone now. Now it is mostly just from having to lay in
certain positions on my recliner. The incisions are still sore of
course. I have this pressure in my chest which isn't horrible, but
annoying. It is gas, so every once in a while feel pressure build up
and then it kind of rolls away. I can get out little burps, but
nothing major. Getting better though. The more I move the better it
is.
I am so glad you are doing well. If you have any questions feel gree
to ask as I am a day ahead of you! Dr.Fox did call this morning to
check in on me and that was really nice! Good luck!

at 9:30am! Were you in the next bed? I am glad to hear that you are
doing well and not in too much pain. My incisions hurt too but I've

This really is a new begining for me.
Hi all. I joined this group shortly before my my surgery on 12.18.06.
I have posted once or twice since then. I decided to sign on and
update on my progress. Two weeks before surgery, I was at an alltime
weight of 327 lbs! Most of this was due to stress at work plus the
fact that I had to appeal twice to my insurance company for the
surgery. Over the course of the past 6 months, my health and life
have changed drastically. No longer am I a slave to FOOD! 10 days
after surgery I joined 24 Hr fitness and began doing YOGA. This in
and of itself made a big difference in my healing time. At 6 ft 5
inches tall and 28 years old, the lifestyle of eating fast food and
not exercising was killing me! Practicing Yoga and working out 3
times a week over the past 6 months combined with the lapband, today
I am 71 bounds lighter weighing in at 257.
I have lost 9 inches in my waist and 10 inches in my chest. I've had
to buy new clothes and the old me has returned. As far as the fills
are concerned, the first couple of fills I did not see any
restriction at all. However, the last fill I had was the most
restrictive of all. At first I thought something was wrong because I
was not able to digest meat on the 2nd day, but then I realized that
I needed to take things slowly. That was 2 weeks ago and I feel
great! To anyone who is skeptical about the surgery, please don't be.
Just remember to follow specifically what Dr. Fox says. Be sure that
you go in at regular intervals to see him so that he can talk with
you about your progress. You may think this is not important, oh but
it is. He has a wealth of knowledge and information and it is always
good to let him know how well you are doing and have your questions
answered. It just feels so good to no longer crave soft drinks,
sweets or BREAD!!
There have been times over the past 6 months that I have gotten down
on myself because I wasn't losing the weight fast enough...but that's
the beauty of lapband...it comes off slowly and it is up to you how
fast you lose it.
There is no magic pill or tonic. It is about more than just not
eating as much...it is about improving the quality of your life.
Being active, making healthy choices for yourself. So to everyone who
has had the surgery...CONGRATULATIONS because it saved my life!
Regards,
KWC487

I just thought I would say hello to everyone on the site and to say
that I have found all of your posts very helpful. I am from Ireland
and I am going to be travelling to the USA to *hopefully* be banded
in July by Dr Fox. He sounds lovely which is a great relief as I am
coming from so far away it is nice to hear positive feedback.
I have been trying to lose some weight on my own and get a hold of
some cravings before the operation in the hopes that I will be in a
better frame of mind for the work afterwards.
I was wondering if anyone knew when you are usually allowed to start
excerising after being banded (apart from walking of course, which I
gather you should start to do asap).
Glad to hear you are all doing so well with your bands and I hope to
be joining you soon.

Great idea. I will try that, it seems very hard to eat meats however
I do know that it is a great source of protein I also purchased the
South Beach diet book and they have some great recipes in there. So I
am going to try those as well.
In reference to your appt. ---Dr. Fox and his staff are very
understanding he wants us all to be successful, they will work with
you as much as possible to make sure that we are continuing with a
successful band experience. We all have things that either come up or
will come up to knock us off our "success track" but thank goodness
we have people like Dr. Fox & staff to help get us up right back
where we need to be. Please keep me informed of your progress and
love to read success stories or just stories that I could possibly
relate to.
Thanks so much for the help.

I had my first fill today since Oct. and as well went into see Dr.
Fox and the gang. I received alot of useful info today. Jodi you have
been dead on with what Dr. Fox & April spoke to me about today. I
also think that I was taking in to much at one time eating. Dr. Fox
mentioned that I should be eating a dime size amount with approx 1
cup of food total per seating. I am very excited about getting some
more of my weight off. I really do like the apple thing you spoke of.
I am going to try that I do like apples however never thought about
cooking them down to soften them up. I also went today and purchased
the South Beach Diet Book (April if you are reading this I went to
1/2 price books..thanks) I am hoping it will help as well. I will
keep everyone informed of whats going on with my weightloss. Please
let me know how everyone else is doing and if I can offer any support
for you like you did for me. As well let me know of anything that
works for you in your diet. I do hope your appt tomorrow goes well.

still very difficult for me to get down so I just dont eat them I do
eat some chicken now and then. I am going tomorrow to get another
fill I had my last one in Oct. I did have some taken out in Jan/Feb
after seeing Dr. Fox he wanted some taken out after I was having such
a difficult time with keeping food down. So I do think I am overdue
to get another one since I am able to eat much more. I am doing some
different exercises. I do a Spin Class on Tuesday's and Thursday's
and on the other day's I do the treadmill and elliptical and occ. the
stair climber. Anyhow. I also am having the worst sweet tooth known
to man. Yeap. Its bad Its really bad once I get home from work and
want to snack. Got any suggestions on how to either eliminate or
substitute the craving. Thanks so much for offering your support and
your advise. I am going to ask about the Aftercare Program I am not
sure if anyone has mentioned that or not. If so I didnt listen.
Thanks again.

Jodi,
I have enjoyed my band experience until now. I am going tomorrow to
get a fill I have not had a fill since Oct. I was having a difficult
time with my last fill so I went in a saw Dr. Fox he said that he
wanted me to have some taken out due to me not being able to get my
food down and keep it down. I had some of it taken out in Jan or Feb.
I still since then have lost no weight but I am hoping that with this
next fill It will be a good thing. I do hope that your appt goes well
on Thursday. Do you fill more depressed since you have not lost any
weight and how do you cope with that? And since I am trying to be as
honest as possible I am having the worst sweet tooth ever. I am
craving all sorts of sweets doesnt matter what just something to
snack on Im not sure if it is that I can eat more or that most sweet
items are just easier to get down. Do I sound like I am losing my
mind or what!!! I am so excited that I am getting to talk to others
that have had their bands done by Dr. Fox. His enire office is a
hoot. I just couldnt have asked for a better Dr. nor a better staff
of ladies. What are your thoughts on, if I possibly havent lost any
weight due to the fills? Thanks again for responses.

First, congrats on the 65 lbs. down, that
is awesome! I have lost very slowly myself. I had my surgery 6/30/05
and am down 91 lbs. from my highest but only 83 from what I weighed when I
started the pre-op diet. I’m thrilled though because I sure look
like a different person and feel great as I’m sure you do. You say
you eat lots of salads, are you sure you’re getting in your 65 grams of
protein every day? How about your water? Those two things can
really make a difference in weight loss. I also work out 5-6 days a week
for an hour per session. Do you change up your cardio often? Our
bodies quickly become adjusted to a certain level of exertion so it’s
important to mix things up. I use the treadmill, recumbent bike,
elliptical, arc trainer and stairmaster and I do different programs each time
to trick my body into letting go of some fat. I also wear a heart rate
monitor to accurately know how many calories I’m burning during my
workout. If you’re doing all these things then you may just need a
fill. Also, when is the last time you had an appt. with Dr. Fox? I’m
not the best at going in myself, but I was struggling early this year and he
referred me to the Aftercare program at AIGB which is next door to SCOR.
I really like my Physician’s Asst. and they are very supportive
there. Well, that’s about all I can suggest. I hope something
here helps, but if all else fails get back in to see the doc because he really
cares about our success. I wish you the best!

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting on this
message board. Dr.
Fox was my surgeon and am very pleased with my whole experience so far
with my band. I am needing ALOT of help though. I have had my band
since May/06 I have lost about 65 lbs. I am very excited about the
weight loss to this point however, I have stopped losing weight I work
out at least 5 days a week 1 hr or longer. I do alot of cardio and I
eat alot of salads. I have had no weight loss since 1/07. Could
someone please advise me as to why I have stopped losing weight. Is
this common?

My surgery was on 12/18/06 and my first fill was on 2/1/07. I went to the After Care Center in Richardson and it was awesome! When you go there, you first talk to an exercise physiologist who discusses what you are eating and workout regiment. I've been exercising 3 times a week since 12/27/06 and doing Yoga twice a week since the beginning of the year.
So far, I've lost 15 lbs since 12/18...however, Dr Fox put me on a 3 week liquid diet pre-op of which I lost 22 lbs. So far, I'm done 37 lbs and feeling great! My goal is to lose 100 lbs total by the end of 2007 and I think I get there. If you can make it to the AIGB Aftercare in Richardson for your fills, PLEASE GO! The Physician Asst there was great and the fill only hurt a little bit but before I knew it, it was over!
Hope this help and best of luck to everyone!

Hi guys! My surgery was on 7/11/06 and I still feel like I am doing so bad, like I am losing so slow. But I guess bottom line is Dr. Fox said I was on schedule and doing well, so I have to be happy with what I have lost so far. I have had a stall for awhile, but after 4 fills, I have found the "sweet spot" It is awesome. It takes so little to fill me up now so my calorie intake is way down. I need to check it to see, but I know from sheer quantity I am doing well. As well as the pounds I have lost this week after
being stalled and my 16's I just bought are getting looser.
Have patience and it will come...as long as you are not binging and eating all bad things, you will do okay. Just drink lots of water and try to exercise every day.
Good luck!! Deanna 7/11/06 235-201-145

Not a medical professional here....just a die hard LapBand patient!!!
It's simple...the LapBand goes around the upper portion of the
stomach, which kinda makes your stomach into the shape of an hour
glass. So, your insides aren't all moved around as you get with the
Bypass. With the Bypass, there's cutting, stapling, and rerouting of
the intestines and of the bowel. That's why people who have the
Bypass can have what's called "dumping", which means the simple
sugars that you and I eat go through a Bypass person causing a quick
rush to the bathroom. Sometimes they can feel other symptoms
too...not too fun from what I here from my friend.
I hope this helps you out. Not only am I banded now but so is my
husband. I love the band and how easy it was to go from surgery on
Friday and back to work the next Tuesday. Don't get me wrong,
though. I was sore. I felt like I did about 1,000 sit ups but that
was all.
I wish you great success this year! You have a new you to get to
know. Keep us informed on how it all works out for you.
Sincerely,
EM

I can't tell you anything negative about the lap band surgery. I asked
the same question before my surgery as well and received this same
response. The only negative thing was that those who responded, and
now I, wish I would have had it sooner. There is a HUGE difference
between the lap band and gastric bypass. GB is a ratical surgery and
has a much longer recovery time while LB is a quick, easy surgery with
a very short recovery time. I could have returned to work within a
couple of days (had a desk job) and been fine. With GB, you will lose
a lot a weight and quickly! However, you will have a lot of excess
skin that you will eventually have to do something with. On the other
hand, with the LB surgery, your weight loss will come but is slower and
gives your body to "re-form" and the skin is more taut. I personally
was not sick after the surgery, but I did have a couple of hours of
nausea due to the anesthesia. For that you will receive a suppository
and you will be fine. Other than that, no problems at all.
Hope this helps you make up your mind. LB is certainly the way to go
and you don't have to take a hand full of pills every day for the
remainder of your life as you do with GB.
If you have any questions, please let us know. We all had, and still
have, questions.
