Hi Kiersten,
I will be more than happy to help your friend from two perspectives: first as a professional in the field of developmental disabilities for 36 years and secondly as a parent of a young man with Down syndrome who turned 17 today!

Hello all.
I am cutting and pasting a request from a friend of mine, a young student. I am, of course, sending her some information but if you have any links, books, etc. to recommend to this student please forward to me privately and I will forward her your suggestions anonymously. Any contributions for this young person is appreciated. Thanks, Kiersten
Please keep the subject as "Help for a student paper" so that I will not delete it by mistake. Her request follows:
Hello,
Right now, I am taking a Psychology course for school and loving it! I have to write a paper for the end of the term and was planning on writing on how psychology has affected patients with Down Syndrome. (For example, how were these people treated in the past? How are they treated now? How has this helped and improved their life?) I was wondering if you know of any books or websites you could recommend? Thanks so much!

My 14 yo has hers done every few years.
Always been negative. Long story…short. One year they said she had atlanto-axial
instability. Hubby was upset. Said the x-ray techs were really rough with her.
She had to have a surgical procedure not long after. Anesthesiologist wouldn’t
let them start procedure without new xrays. New xrays were fine. Showed no
instability. The doctor’s consensus was, the set showing instability were
done incorrectly.

Tyler
has gone every year or two since he was about 3.
I am a little confused? We had Alden cleared for
this and I thought that was the end of it? You mean it can happen
later? Did you post the websites that you found? I need to know
if this is something to have X-rayed on a regular basis because I thought
once they were cleared, that was it!!!! Advice?? Kiersten
I just found some web sites.
It doesn't sound as if there is any treatment or strengthening exercises
that might work to help the situation. It does sound like he may grow
out of it just like he "grew" into it.
Sounds like atlanto-axial
instability. Look that up. My son was diagnosed with this years ago but the
space between his vertebrae is getting better. Basically there is an extra
space between the first and second vertebrae or where the spine connects to
the head. They have to watch doing contact sports or anything that would
jolt their head like diving, soccer. If you have any more questions just
let me know.

My son just failed his spinal
X-ray. My ex-wife is short on details as far as what this means other
than he will need to go to an orthopedist. He is age 9 and hasn't
failed one before this year. They have said he can continue in gym
class and also his cheerleading activity since he only lifts people up and
doesn't get lifted. He does do somersaults though.
I would like to be a bit more educated, but can't seem to find a good
website for information.

Thanks so much! I can rest a little easier. He will see the orthopedist next week so that will give us a bit more information. I will be there for that appointment. I have been to past appointments for the spinal x-ray, but since there hadn't been any issues in the past. <sigh> That's always when stuff happens.
Michael sees the ortho every two years. If the space gets too bad, they can do surgery to fuse the space, but this doc told me that is an absolute last resort and they only do that if the child is showing symptoms. And for the life of me can't remember those. And he also told me that in his 20 plus years he had never seen a child get paralyzed because of this if they would happen to fall down the stairs or something like that. Its something to be aware of, but not worry too much about.
