The day before Thanksgiving we had to rush Zyon to the hospital. He was having bad stomach pains. He's not properly digesting his food. I realized after doing my own research that this is more common in kids with DS than I thought. Here's some information I've come across that might be helpful.

Please take a moment to read this article.

I love it!!!!  We went out to eat, too.  None of us ate the same thing, either!  And no one ate Turkey!  LOL

We went out for Thanksgiving dinner with my Mom, her cousin, her cousin's husband and the two of us.  Not being a traditional family, none of us ordered the classic meal.  Christo ordered a double bacon cheeseburger.  The waitress asked how he would like it cooked and he replied, "Fried".  The waitress contained her laughter, but the tears rolled down her face.

Hope you all had a wonderful day with family and friends.

I will be more than happy to help your friend from two perspectives:  first as a professional in the field of developmental disabilities for 36 years and secondly as a parent of a young man with Down syndrome who turned 17 today!

Hello all.

I am cutting and pasting a request from a friend of mine, a young student. I am, of course, sending her some information but if you have any links, books, etc. to recommend to this student please forward to me privately and I will forward her your suggestions anonymously. Any contributions for this young person is appreciated. Thanks, Kiersten

Please keep the subject as "Help for a student paper" so that I will not delete it by mistake. Her request follows:

Hello,

Right now, I am taking a Psychology course for school and loving it! I have to write a paper for the end of the term and was planning on writing on how psychology has affected patients with Down Syndrome. (For example, how were these people treated in the past? How are they treated now? How has this helped and improved their life?) I was wondering if you know of any books or websites you could recommend? Thanks so much!

~Greta

P.S. my mom says hi and she misses Alden!!

My 14 yo has hers done every few years. Always been negative. Long story…short. One year they said she had atlanto-axial instability. Hubby was upset. Said the x-ray techs were really rough with her. She had to have a surgical procedure not long after. Anesthesiologist wouldn’t let them start procedure without new xrays. New xrays were fine. Showed no instability. The doctor’s consensus was, the set showing instability were done incorrectly.

I just found some web sites.  It doesn't sound as if there is any treatment or strengthening exercises that might work to help the situation.  It does sound like he may grow out of it just like he "grew" into it.

Sounds like atlanto-axial instability. Look that up. My son was diagnosed with this years ago but the space between his vertebrae is getting better. Basically there is an extra space between the first and second vertebrae or where the spine connects to the head. They have to watch doing contact sports or anything that would jolt their head like diving, soccer. If you have any more questions just let me know.

My son just failed his spinal X-ray.  My ex-wife is short on details as far as what this means other than he will need to go to an orthopedist.  He is age 9 and hasn't failed one before this year.  They have said he can continue in gym class and also his cheerleading activity since he only lifts people up and doesn't get lifted.  He does do somersaults though.

I would like to be a bit more educated, but can't seem to find a good website for information.

Anyone else experience this type of issue.

Thanks so much!  I can rest a little easier.  He will see the orthopedist next week so that will give us a bit more information.  I will be there for that appointment.  I have been to past appointments for the spinal x-ray, but since there hadn't been any issues in the past.  <sigh>  That's always when stuff happens.

Thanks again.

And for the life of me can't remember those. And he also told me that in his 20 plus years he had never seen a child get paralyzed because of this if they would happen to fall down the stairs or something like that. Its something to be aware of, but not worry too much about.

Michael sees the ortho every two years. If the space gets too bad, they can do surgery to fuse the space, but this doc told me that is an absolute last resort and they only do that if the child is showing symptoms. And for the life of me can't remember those. And he also told me that in his 20 plus years he had never seen a child get paralyzed because of this if they would happen to fall down the stairs or something like that. Its something to be aware of, but not worry too much about.

Hi
I'm Amy Camodeca, a grad student at the University of Windsor in Windsor
Ontario. I conduct neuropsychological assessments for the school board in
Windsor and have worked with kids (aged 2-18) with many kinds of disabilities
for the last 5 years.

I'm doing a project (my dissertation) about parents of children with different
types of disabilities or problems that impact learning in school, including Down
Syndrome. I'm looking at how social and academic skills in parents are related
to coping with having a child with any kind of developmental challenge.

Your input is important because we know that the children who do well have
parents that advocate for them and understand their needs. The purpose of my
study is to help parents who don't do these things as well do them better, and
help their child at home and at school.

All information is confidential, and you can enter a pseudonym (a not real name)
on the consent form if you'd like. You can also enter yourself into a draw for a
$50 (CDN) Toys R Us gift card (optional).

It doesn't matter how old your child is, but you have to be a biological mom or
dad of the child. If you (the parent) have fewer than 30 minutes to complete
some online questionnaires (about yourself) and look at some eyes and pick the
emotion that goes with it, I would REALLY appreciate it!

Here's the link to my study, which has more information:
https://camodeca.net/studies

My study has been approved by the University REB. My research advisor is Dr. S.
Voelker. The university website is www.uwindsor.ca.

Thanks!
