Brittnie Harvey is no different from many 23-year-olds juggling the challenges of balancing life and work.

JEREMY MAREADY | LEDGER PHOTOS

Brittnie Harvey signs "I love you." Harvey, 23, hopes to build a business as a sign language interpreter. "She's nothing that I was told she would be," Janice Harvey says of her daughter, who was born with Down syndrome.

Holding down a part-time job at Publix Super Markets while trying to start her own business as a sign language interpreter is no easy feat. Add to that signing classes, volunteer work, tutoring sessions and a boyfriend, and the hassles of life entering the work force compound further.

And while that may seem like a heavy load of responsibility,
Harvey has another obstacle in her way - she was born with Down syndrome, a developmental disability.

So far, it hasn't proved a formidable force.

"I can do anything I want to with just a little extra work," she said.

"Basically, that's become her motto," said Lin Taylor-Kosik, Harvey's coach and co-founder of Coaches and Companions in
Lakeland. "It's amazing to me how we classify people as disabled, but they have amazing strengths and gifts that most people don't take the time to see."

Taylor-Kosik helps
Harvey with day-to-day tasks that others may take for granted, such as cooking.

At birth,
Harvey's pediatricians had all but written her off as just another disabled person.

"They told me all the nightmares," said Janice Harvey, Brittnie's mother. "There were so many questions. They told me she would never be able to do certain things."

But as a parent, Janice Harvey didn't want to accept that her daughter wouldn't have certain childhood experiences because of a disability.

So, she fired the pediatrician.

Years of persistent teaching and continually challenging
Harvey helped her learn new skills, like how to ride a bike.

"Most people with Down syndrome can't ride a bike," said Taylor-Kosik. "When other people hear she can do that, they're like, 'Wow, how were you able to do that?'"

It took a whole weekend, along with some scrapes and bruises, to get it down.

"She kept falling off," said Janice Harvey. "But I kept on her to do it. I kept telling her that you can do anything if you put your mind to it."

"I thought I could do it on my own and by myself,"
Harvey said.

Harvey has tackled and overcome many other challenges since then.

Programs like
Florida's Agency for Persons with Disabilities and Florida Southern's Transitional Program have helped Harvey make the transition from a school setting into the workplace.

"She's more than I dreamt she would ever be," Janice Harvey said of her daughter. "She's nothing that I was told she would be."

Harvey receives support coordination and in-home services from APD to enable her to work and live in her community.

Since her graduation from
George Jenkins High School in 2003, Harvey has worked for Publix and now serves as a front service clerk at a store in South Lakeland.

"Brittnie bags groceries, helps customers to their cars and collects carts from the parking lot," Amy Williams, the store's assistant customer service manager, said in an e-mail. "She's a great employee - always on time and always willing to do anything she is asked to do. Brittnie is respectful of co-workers and customers, and she's very friendly."

In May,
Harvey decided to branch out, possibly into her own business venture.

While in the transition program, Harvey and several of her classmates began taking sign language courses. The learning curve was brief.

After barely a year, she's taking that talent on the road, interpreting songs for weddings, parties and retirement homes.

"It is like Christmas every day," said Taylor-Kosik. "They show you things inside of them you never thought they could do."

Now, while she says she's dedicated to working for Publix, Harvey is building up her music portfolio - learning one or two songs per tutoring session - and performs several times a week at the different homes.

"I really like making people smile," she said.

Our Tess gets something similar...we always know when she is tired because the rim of her eyelids gets pink. They aren't swollen, though, although the "bags" under her eyes get more prominent when she's tired as well. She's had this since she was an infant, and she's 6 now. I never even thought of trying any treatment, other than getting her to bed!  :)

A point I hoped to make was to do the research anyway (NOT solely on the internet!!), taking each and every vaccination one by one, and finding out if it is really and truly still needed.  It may be precarious but what is the alternative?

I do not think the vast majority of the population goes to the doctor, gets their children vaccinated and is fully and completely in understanding of what they are doing, what they are injecting (mercury is still in some flu vaccines and vaccines still have lots of other heavy metals...as well as other things), or understands the real risks that are there (or may or may not be there but that nobody can tell you FOR SURE one way or the other), etc.  There is a reason the mainstream view is what it is.

I think everyone should know they don't have to have the vaccinations, know that they should get their child tested before giving boosters to see if they really need it, know that just because you get the vaccination does not mean you are 100% immune to getting the disease, know that you can select which vaccinations you want, split them up if you want, or delay them until your child is older, know that vaccines enter your body’s system quite differently then the real disease would, etc.  Vaccinations should be given only after parents do the research and feel 100% confident they are doing the right thing.
If your child ends up being the one affected negatively by a vaccination, it will be your responsibility, your life, your child’s life… not the doctor’s life who is affected!!

Cindy

Hi,

I was talking about the disease that each vaccine protects you from -
measles, etc. Since people rarely get these today (due to vaccines)
we've forgotten just how serious they can be, especially in young
children or unborn children when the mother catches the disease while
pregnant. Some can result in death or permanent disability. The idea
that the risk of vaccine is worse than the disease is obviously not a
mainstream view, let's put it that way. It's quite clear that children
are far, far better off now than they were when these diseases
routinely killed thousands each year and left many more deaf or blind
or paralyzed. I'm not sure you can point to something that vaccines
have caused that is worse than that.

As for wrong information, there's plenty out there. In your message, I
was focused on when you talked about autism (the idea that mercury
causes it has been pretty much disproven at this point, though it's
not a settled question) and talking about pumping children with metals
(sure, that's a bad idea, but mercury has been removed from vaccines
in the U.S. as a precaution anyway). Other than that, I'm not saying
you gave bad information, just that doing your own research can be a
precarious proposition. I strongly agree that parents should learn all
they can about the health treatment of their children, but that
includes sorting all the bad information from the good, especially on
the internet.

Hi viviane,

I may give you more than you asked for but since you did ask and I am so passionate about this particular subject I will give you all the information I have, I will also throw in my feelings along the way.

First of all I have 3 boys, Marcus is my first and he is 9. I delayed vaccinations on him because he was 6 weeks early and I felt his little body was too small to process all of the ingerdients properlly. To make a long story short Marcus was your typical 3 year old little boy when he started recieveing his DtaP series of vacs. Within 1 month he was soo different, it was like he was empty, there were no smiles, no eye contact, no socizilation. NOTHING my baby (at that time) was gone.  I didnt have a clue why at this time. I later figured it out and i will fill you in on that in a few.

Chase is my second and he is 5, after the change in Marcus I decided that I would do some research on vacs to see if they had ANY involvment in what happened to Marcus, so Chase was delayed quite awhile. I finally caved in after much pressure from the navy doctors and started Chase's vacs right after he turned 2. I only allowed them to give him 1 Vax at a time (unlike Marcus) so that I could be sure of what he was recieveing and give his body time to fight it. Chase was 2 3/4 when he recieved his first DTaP and that was one of the biggest mistakes i have ever made!! Chase got the vaccination at 10:30, we got home at 10:50 I went to the fridge to get Chase some grapes, when I came back he was sitting on the couch and had pulled the bandaid off of his leg. I noticed that his leg was beginning to swell so I goe ice to put on it, from the time I went to the freezer to get ice and came back it was even bigger. At this time I call the DR, he assures me this is normal, I try to explain to him that this doesnt seem normal to me, but he insists it is so we get off the phone. By 11:30 his leg was so swollen that the diaper was cutting off circulation and I had to take his diaper off and put a pull up on as it was more flexible. I immediatlly put him in the car and drove to the hospitl, I knew this wasnt right. At the hospital the gave Chase a triple dose of antihystemine, hoping to counter the reaction, it did not good. By 3 PM they had lanced his leg to relieve some pressure as his skin was turning black from lack of blood flow. They kept giving him more and more antihystemine and admitted him. the next day 2 surgeons came in to speak with me, they wanted to amputate his leg. They explained to me that if they didnt amputate there was a high risk of blood clots getting stuck in his heart or lungs and killing him. They asked me to sign the paper so they could take him to surgery. I asked for a few minutes alone, I needed to think. I was alone, my husband was deployed at this time. I couldnt imagine allowing them to take my babys leg, what kind of life would he have had?? (my thoughts at the time), I couldnt understand how something so bad could have come from me trying to do what I thought was right and listen to the doctors and vaccinate my child, it was so unfair!!. I prayed (sorry to those who dont believe in prayer) and god told me to wait until morning. So I told the surgeons that I wanted to wait until morning and if the swelling hadnt started to go away then I would sign the consent form. 4 am they come back and measure his leg again. THANK GOD the swelling had went down 1/8 of an inch!! But enough for them to agree to keep his leg attached. We spent another week in the hospital.  After this I did serious research and wanted to find out what cause it to go so wrong. THe doctor told me that if I were to have another child there is no way the baby should recieve the DTaP, i assured him I wasnt having anymore.

Thru my research I found out alot about vaccines, including their ingredients. I will post a couple links for those who are interested. Beware its not for the faint of heart. I was shocked beyond belief when I realized how much I had allowed to be injected into my children. Things that I dont support to begin with. I dont want aborted fetus serum in my children!!

My 3rd child is Seth. I knew before he was born that I wasnt going to vaccinate, there is no way I was going to take that Chance again. Well when he was born my "dream" was shattered. He had Down Snydrome ( I didnt know until he was born) and all I was told was how horrible his immune system would be, how it was mandatory he recieve all of his vacs on time, even tho he was 6 weeks early. I didnt want to inject my baby with these horrible things, but I had too (or so they said) it was for his life. I was wrestled into argeeing to allow him his HepB at birth. Between that time and the time he went in for his 2 month check up I did even more research and came across an article written by a doctor specifically about Vaccinations and Down Syndrome. He had alot of great points and he was the person who gave me the courage to say No, no matter what the doctors said. Some of the things that he said that got to me were "There hasnt been any testing done on Down Snydrome children and their reaction to vaccines, they have totally different neurological make-ups than "normal" children so how can you put them on the normal schedule" "If their immune system is comprimed what effect do you think it will have injecting hundrends of forgien bodies into them at once". I would need to add that he was not for NO vaccinations, just on a different schedule and timeline and definitlly nothing before the age of 3. I choose to fall back on my previous plan of no vaccinations until Seth is older.

Seth is now 2 1/2 and he is on the regular growth chart, has meet all of his milestones as if he did no have DS. He is not behind in anyway. The doctors have no answer for me, they cant say why he is so normal and seems to have no ill effect from DS other than the typical eyes and his thyroid doesnt work as well as it should. I have been asked to prove to them that he could crawl, walk etc. They said there was no way he was doing these things on time. They were so wrong. Not 1 of the doctors can look me in the face and tell me that not getting his vaccinations and not taxing out his system trying to process this stuff, and instead leaving his system to work on what it should have been working on!! I dont regret my decision at all.

Here is a link to mothering dot com, they have a forum espically for vaccinations. Just incase anyone wants to read.

Thanks for reading this is you have made it this far. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I dont push my views on others but I am more than happy to share them when asked :)

Charleene

P.S  I am including 2 pictures of his leg 45 minutes after the injection. This was right before we went to the hospital, of course it got MUCH worse but I didnt have my camera there. They did take pictures for his medical record tho.

Subject: [down_syndrome] Question about vaccines???

Hi  Everyone!!

I have a 11 month old boy and I have been very skeptical about vaccines. 'm giving it to him, but one at the time, and therefore we are one shot behind right now. He will be one  year old in December and then vaccines will start again.

Well, my question is ? Did you follow the vaccines guidelines from doctors office? Do you think about vaccines and Autism being related? Please if you could take the time to give me your opinion will be well apreciated.

Thanks

Viviane TAschner

My husband and I are contemplating a move south from CT. Our son (with
Down syndrome) is turning 3 in March. (We have another son who is 1
1/2.)

Anyhow...I was curious to know how the school systems and services in
the Fort Myers area are. Our final decision will rest on whether or
not Jake will benefit from our move. (Health wise, it's a no
brainer...his typical dry skin and runny nose fare very well in the
warm climate.) But his education and support services are a huge deal
as well as you could imagine.

Any feedback and input would be helpful.

Thanks

Subject: [down_syndrome] BIG NEWS!!!

For the past three years I've been wishing that someone who owns an antique shop would call me and ask me to run their shop.  What are the odds of that, right? Well, evidently they're pretty good because I actually GOT that call last Sunday night!

The owner of Tink's Antiques in Tamaqua no longer has time to keep the business open. She knew about me because I had given her my business card last year in the hopes that I could do some consignment work for her.  I'm talking - LAST year at THIS time. A whole year had gone by before I heard from her again. Anyway, she finally called and asked if I would be willing to run the business in exchange for working on commission and also allowing me to have a space in her store for my own merchandise.  I told her that I would rather let Billy have room in the shop for HIS comic business, but I would LOVE to work there! We had a meeting tonight, and worked out all of the details.

I'll be opening the shop at 10 am tomorrow!!!

We're going to run on limited hours (same hours it used to be open) - Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 PM.  Billy and I are going to split the hours up - and still work at home.

I'm just so THRILLED that we'll have a rent-free SHOP - LOTS of business exposure - MUCH MORE commissions - unlimited eBay supplies - AND I'll get to have some "me-time" doing what I love.

I'm already planning on always having coffee on hand for the customers, etc...very homey atmosphere.  The store needs some work. It has been sitting since May.  I can't wait to get in there and fix it up!

We'll be getting a cable line installed for Internet access and we'll be buying a new laptop tomorrow.

I feel like I got an early Christmas present!

Oh - and I will be begging my mother PROFUSELY for her babysitting services if Billy finds a promising job soon.  She is not too keen on watching Olivia - I'm going to have to figure something out when I have to cross that bridge.

Hugs,
Carolyn

We have a Burley Solo for our son - he LOVES it - he can eat crackers and sip on his sippy while we are all sweating to death :)
Best of all this one is a little more expensive but it's made for ONE and you can adjust the back with tension straps - I believe it weighs only 14 pounds and you can't hardly tell it's behind you. It also has more than enough room in the "trunk" for all your other stuff, like the diaper bag, water, etc...
I found mine new on e-bay and got a great deal!

Burley makes a number of good ones. Their website is http://www.burley.com/

My children have loved them. I don't recall how old your son/daughter
is, but they also have an extra bike attachement that adds onto the
back. We got ours at REI, but there are others. It took Tyler a little
while to get on it...well two days, but he now loves it as well. He's 7.
