As I said in an earlier posting to Bev, I've been re-reading James Hollis's
Swamplands of the Soul, and have developed the following five-card spread
for LATS in September. I would appreciate it if you would try it out and
let me know how it works, or doesn't.

The Swampland Spread (Based on ideas from James Hollis's Swamplands of the
Soul).

Lay out the five cards of this spread in a straight line.

Position 1 - How am I avoiding being present in my life?
Position 2 - Where would I rather not go, but need to go?
Position 3 - What task am I avoiding?
Position 4 - What change of behavior or attitude does this issue oblige
me to adopt?
Position 5 - Based on the preceding four cards, how do I need to re-
imagine or redefine myself?

Sandra:

Here is what I came up with:

1. How am I avoiding being present in my life?

The Emperor: I used the Animals Divine Tarot, which shows a rather stormy scene, with a figure representing Zeus standing, a staff in his right hand and a crystal ball in his left hand. A buffalo stands behind him, and a golden Eagle sits on a branch in front of him. I have known this for some time - I am avoiding taking the actions that will get me where I want to go. As far as this group, and weight issues go, I need to do what is right for me, or I will become ill. Emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually ill.

2. Where I would rather not go, but need to go?

Temperance: Here we see the Goddess Xochiquetzal, with her flowing tresses and free-flowing energy. I need to allow my creative nature to flow. This is interesting, because I was not really aware that I was afraid to go here.

3. What task am I avoiding?

Ace of Wands: The Ace of Wands is represented by the Firefly. How telling that the task I am avoiding is connecting with my passionate, creative nature. This really goes back to the task that I have been avoiding also. I am filled with potential that has not manifested (or manifested in a minimal manner).

4. What changes of behavior or attitude does this issue oblige me to adopt?

Nine of Pentacles: The Nine of Pentacles in Animals Divine is represented by the Bear, which in Native American lore is connected to shamanism and healing. I need to accept my own power, and my own success.

5. Based on the preceding four cards, how do I need to re-imagine or redefine myself?

King of Wands: In the Animals Divine deck, the King of Wands is Gama Sennin, a Japanese God. Interesting side note: one of this Gods abilities is that of shapeshifting. :) I need to see myself as one who gets things done, as a leader and decision maker. I need to take charge of my weight and food issues, and bring out the me that is already there.

*** A note on my initial reaction to the wording of position number four - I might reword this, perhaps along the lines of "What changes of behavior or attitude will help me deal with this issue?

This is a powerful spread, dealing with issues head on. The cards that I drew did represent the issues in my life as I see them.

Thanks for your feedback, Bonnie.

The one thing I remember about Zeus, besides his power and authority, is how he was busy impregnating females, and I wonder what this has to do with you, i.e., your creative, fertile energy (since so much of your reading deals with this)?  You may avoid listening to the masculine energy that calls upon you to structure you inner and outer life such that you can manifest the actions you need to take.

Thinking of your reading with another deck (the World Spirit deck, ever heard of it?), this Emperor deals with the "myths" with which you empower (or not) yourself. Also he is kind of ruthless, and possibly tyrannical, and while we often need his discipline, we do not want to be controlled by it--more like, inspired.

Where you would rather not go and need to:  Temperance.  I think this card is also suggesting that in addition to the masculine energy of the Emperor, you need the feminine energy of the goddess.  In other words, you need a balance, i.e., Temperance.

Avoiding: Ace of Wands.  You are avoiding the "calling," the invitation to open yourself to living your creative ideas.

Changes you are obliged to adopt: Nine of Pentacles.  For me, nines are the end of a cycle and the individual is in a liminal state while trying to make a decision about going on (into the court card experiences) or return through the suit.  Interesting that you say Bear is related to shamanism in Native American lore.  In the World Spirit Nine of Pentacles, a woman stands beneath what might be considered a dream catcher, or some other Native American design.  She clearly looks like she is waiting and pondering as she strokes her striped cat (feminine instinct).  The World Spirit card Nine of Pentacles suggests to me that whatever you decide to do (when you move from the nine), it needs to involve nature because the card is filled with beautiful, growing things.  Perhaps your shamanism deals with being a steward of the land, or perhaps it just means that you need to connect with nature more emotionally or ceremonially.

King of Wands, a shapeshifter.  I love it.  Don't we all in this group need to be shapeshifters????  The Sage of Wands in the World Spirit card travels in the desert (a certain kind of impoverishment, even though he is a king) on a black camel (definitely shadow instincts).  For Godino and O'Leary he represents ambition and leadership.  It hints to me that somehow your shadow work (or failure/slowness to do shadow work) interferes with the manifesting of your creative leadership and charisma.  He is dressed in white (purity) and suggests that a certain amount of spiritual work has already been done, but in conjunction with the Temperance/Emperor combination, it strikes me that what you have been doing spiritually needs to be combined with shadow work, so you can get out of this desert.

Thanks for the comments on the structure of the spread.  I always like to try out new spreads on other first before I give them to a group (my students used to have to suffer through this), so they can be polished.  Because of various other commitments, I have yet to use it on myself, but I developed it while sitting in the care waiting on my sister and her granddaughter to shop.

Now we have been busy cleaning and changing the energy where they stayed, so we can settle down again.

Well, Bev, it looks to me like with the Three of Wands you would rather play (escape?) than avoid being present, although some believe that play can be a time when we are most present.  Anyway, you have the three birds of spirit in your sky (masculine/spiritual energy) and the three ships (feminine energy) sailing on the unconscious.  As a three, of course, it reflects the ending of one phase of your life, and the potential for a new beginning.  Watch those leaps!  Or maybe it's a leap of faith.  I call this card one of "maintaining your vision of the future."  I think it reflects the beginning of the clarification of our ideas.

Where would you rather not go.  The Moon.  Yes, indeed, some soul searching, shadow work.  Always scary.  Mary Greer says that The Moon card deals with the ongoing evolution of becoming what we can possibly be.always raises the question of the anxiety of dealing with our unconscious

What task avoiding.  Seer of wands.  Remember that the seer in this deck is a page in other decks.  Pages to my mind represent making a commitment, even though we don't really know what's ahead.  I liken them to the person who has committed to go to graduate school even thought he/she doesn't have any real idea about what that commitment and experience is going to involve.  In the World Spirit deck, seers represent young, delicate students who need nurturance and protection.  In The World Spirit card, the black huntress stands on a desert plain with her cheetah.  The adventure with this card is, once again that of recognizing and reconciling the shadow, the instinctual feminine within (dark female, instinctual feline) without allowing it to devour us.  In our shamanic work, we each receive an inner jaguar to protect us while we do our inner work, so there is a second meaning to this animal.  She needs to tame the instinct, at the same time, it will serve to protect her if she treats it honorably and does not try to tame it, but, rather, reconcile with it (honor it?).

Change need to adopt.  Seeker of Wands.  You certainly have a number of wands cards as you progress through this spread, and, finally, four out of five cards.  Well, first you have the Seer of Wands, needing to make a commitment.  then the Seeker of Wands, the equivalent of a Knight of Wands in other decks.  From my perspective knights never know as much as they think they do.  They have a little more learning than the page, and often their ego gets in the way of what they actually know.  This and the Three of Wands raise the question in my mind of whether or not you need to play more, or whether you simply "play" with ideas rather than working on them.

In each card where there are a human and an animal, the card addresses the issue of paradox, of holding the tension of the opposites between the conscious and the unconscious long enough for a third solution or ingith to arise.  The RWS Knight of Wands, like the RWS Page, wears an incomplete uroborous on his garment.  The card addresses the same alchemical process, yet he heads toward the left side of the card in the RWS deck, suggesting that a new spiritual awareness (the three pyramids) awaits him if he can resolve past issues, possibly those related from, or taught by, family experiences.

In The World Spirit card, there is this ambivalence of position./thought/intent.  The burro faces toward the left, but the rider actually faces right in his casual position.  I have the sense of "do I want to do this or not."  Maybe you're a little too casual in your spiritual/food work (to me they are the same).

How do you need to redefine yourself.  The sybyl of wands.  Essentially the Queen of Wands.  Does your explanation that you already see yourself as like her, again prevent you from seeing ways in which you might redefine yourself?  Remember, the position asks how you need to re-imagine or re-define yourself.

I am struck by the first paragraph from the manual,  which describes her as putting energy into her family and friends, devoting herself to family and projects.  Again, the manual suggests that the Sybyl of Wands finds success even in difficult situations.  Perhaps you need to inwardly define yourself more like the Sibyl of Wands.  Even though you think you may be all that she represents, perhaps not quite.  For those of us who have an inner witch mother, this sybyl/queen,
and anyone like her, can serve as a mentor/model.  Do you know how to get out of your head and put your ideas into action?  Note that "her" cheetah has become a more domesticated cat!

Just some thoughts re my own reactions to the cards you drew, and take them as that (my own sense of the cards).  As always, our own visions are most true for us, and we all need to move from ideas into manifestation (pentacles).

Glad you liked the spread.

Sandra

As you can see, I don't always work with the decks that I "should" be working with. I knew that it would be politically correct to use the World Spirit Tarot for the sample reading, but the Animals Divine deck really wanted to be used.

I have a new Guide that I feel will be with me for the rest of my life. We are having a hard time connecting, which tells me that I need to ramp up my energy. One of the things that is manifesting is that I am seeing more of the "energy forms/people" around me. I have always seen them, but I am getting like a "times ten" version now. ;-)

I connect this with the Shadow work that I need to do, the accepting of new roles, and putting my thoughts/work out there, so that they can be shot down. ;-)

I didn't mean to imply that you were using an "incorrect" deck, Bonnie.  Just some thoughts that came up for me from the deck we are using.

For all of us, any deck that calls to us to be read with a particular spread is the one that "should" be used at that time.

Interesting that your card for position four clarified your card for position three, just as mine did.

I understand having the "safe place" of living in your head. I do that too - and make no apologies. :)

You did not guilt me about the deck - I did that to myself. ;-) I had just finished reviewing the other deck, so I really did need to use it in real time, in some way.

Having said that - I also need to get to work with the World Spirit deck. I am far from having a good understanding of it.
