Kyle:
That's good that you are able to tolerate that shampoo.
Unfortunately, I am stuck with using only natural soap-based
products.
I think Giovanni, as well as most shampoos, use either SLS or a
related compound as a base for the shampoo. I think this one uses
olefin sulfonate as it's cleansing agent.
I am also leary of Betaine and sodium hydroxymethyglycinate. They
caution that pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid the use
of betaine. However, I think they are referring to ingestion.

Anyway, it sure can get complicated analyzing and dissecting
ingredients. Sometimes manufacturers are vague about what exactly is
in their products. For example, I recently came across a laundry
detergent that claimed to be so "natural" and "wonderful", however,
they were vague about their ingredients. They listed "surfactants"
as
an ingredient. A surfactant can be a synthetic, semi-synthetic, or a
naturally derived soap. Listing "surfactant" as an ingredient is
ludicrous. It gives no information.
I guess the bottom line is if the base of the cleansing product (the
part that cleanses and lathers) is directly created from whole oils
or if it is synthetically created from oil derivatives, like SLS is,
which is a coconut oil derivative.

Fragrance is the culprit, and the answer is:
