Dear Lisa,
My heart goes out to you. I've had the same problems, but because of my belief in natural healing, approached things much differently. For me, surgery is the very last option.
Feb. 7 I woke up with extreme pain in my right shoulder and with 3 numb fingers in right hand. After x rays and mri scan, it was diagnosed that I had a slipped disc between C4 and 5 that was, fortunately only slightly displacing the spinal cord.
I already had a chiropracter I'd gone to for years, so he was the first one I called. He'd had the same problem and I trusted him so I began sessions that were every other day for the first couple of weeks. I also went to a acupunturist, whom I already knew. Then I got my daughter, who studied cranio sacral therapy to book me with a good therapist. Those were the three modalities I chose. Within 4 weeks I had no pain. The fingers are still a little numb but that is most probably because the nerve will now have to regenerate.
Lower back pain has plagued me since my twenties (I'm 57). I've kept it in check with yoga and chiropractic treatment and two years ago the pain left completely after two acuncture treatments. I get Japanese acupuncture which works on the para sympathetic system, thus causing less pain than the Chinese version which works on the sympathetic system.
It is said also that lower back pain is about not feeling financially supported. I got married at 18, baby at 19 and in my twenties could have written a book entitled "365 ways to cook hamburger". In the past ten years, the only times my back pain came was a day or so after I'd somehow felt unsupported by my second husband, subtly or otherwise. It was usually my perception based on my history, but I noticed the pattern and began correcting my thinking.
I hope that all helps in some way. Incidently "degenerative disc disease" sounds dreadful, really scary, and in reality everyone's discs degenerate as they age, some just faster than others usually do to posture, sport etc. etc. etc. So don't let that frighten you. Stay calm and explore your alternatives to pills and surgery. It's out there. Go find it girl.
with love,
Sharron
