I tried these once and did just that... put a bit of water on one and it turned just as black and yucky looking as the one I'd had on my foot. The moisture from the foot sweating during the night causes the same coloring as a bit of water. It's the herbs inside that cause the color, not toxins in the body. Consider that when one sweats in the sauna, it does not come out black.... just clear or slightly yellow... and sauna's have been proven to excrete toxins while footpads have not. The whole "black" thing is just a marketing gimmick to trick us into thinking we are excreting toxicants IMHO. And that may be the case and is yet to be proven, but if we are excreting toxicants, it's not the black stuff on the pad.
I did not find footpads useful at all.

If you have used that many pads and don't notice a difference
they are probably not doing anything significant. Did you try to
just put a small amount of water in one of the bags and leaving
it overnight to see if the color changes without your foot in it?
