DES Manufacturers: Background Information It is estimated that during the period of its approval in the U.S. for use during pregnancy (1947-1970s), DES was manufactured by about 267 companies under a variety of product names (Edelman, 1986). Eli Lilly was the primary manufacturer (70% market share as of 1971).
