I colored for ten years, too, and am one year and four months into growing the auburn color out. I'm guessing, given the general pokiness of my hair growth, that I've got another 4-6 months to go to get all the top layer grown out.
My biggest fear was looking older and maybe I'm delusional, but I don't think I do. I'm not going to say I look *younger* (drat it all!), but no older, either. I have a lot of white/platinum in the front and sides and more pepper/salt as it goes toward the back. I am way more conscious of undyed hair now than I ever was before and that's a pretty common trait.
Check out all the member pictures in the Photos section and you'll see us in all phases of the process and a lot of different end results, too,
as far as final colors/shades of gray, charcoal, pewter, silver, white. Gorgeous, every last one of'em! Another good resource for info and member pix and discussion is http://www.goinggraylookinggreat.com ---- Anita, in Dallas, TX

[deciding_to_go_gray] new member questionare
1. What country/state are you from?
USA/FL
2. Are you considering showing your gray, are in the process or are already displaying a gray mane?
I am considering showing my gray. I want to stop coloring my hair after coloring it for 10 years.
3. What kind of reception have you received from family and friends?
All say it will make me look older.
4. What are your reasons? Fears?
Reasons: Dislike the coloring process/chemicals. Living in FL the color fades quickly due to daily washing and sun.
Fears: My natural color might not be consistent all over my head. I fear the sides may be white with the top and back being salt and pepper.
5. What support would you like to get from this group?
Encouragement thru out the process. Tips, advice and help on how to go thru the process.
6. Do you feel voluntary member pictures would be helpful?
Welcome, Wende! Glad to have another Floridian in the Group.

And another Wendy / Wende ! (I'm guessing your name may be pronounced the same
as mine. :)
I am also in Florida, in the part of the state that usually gets chopped off the
map - Pensacola.
Just a couple of quick comments. All my color is pretty much cut off now, and I
am natural. I did go shorter during the process, but I have never been
comfortable with wearing short hair, so I went with mid length layered cut. I
had colored for about 10 years. When I started I really didnt have any gray,
just wanted to do something different. Over the years my hair got lighter and
lighter. :) So when I quit coloring I not only didnt know if I had much if any
gray I also had all but forgotten what my natural color was! So it has been an
interesting journey. Turns out my hair is a lot darker than I thought it was
and I just have sprinkling of silver, not a dramatic gray look.
Like many others here, I went "cold turkey", and although there were a few
periods where I really hated my hair, overall it wasnt nearly as bad as you
might think. And looking back, I would say it's been one of the best things
I've done in years and I am happier with my hair than I have ever been. Of
course in many ways I am far more comfortable with who I am than I have ever
been and that may be a natural part of being a lady of a "certain age", (which
many of us are who are making this transition.)
So to you Wende, and the the others who are just starting this journey, be
encouraged and enjoy the process. I think most of us who have been through it
have found it very worthwhile and are happy we did it.
Love,
Wendy

When I started NOT coloring my hair, I used to tell people I was just "trying to
remember what my natural color was". It's now all natural, just above shoulder
length, and I STILL don't really know what color it is! LOL. (The sprinkling of
gray really changes the look of the original color.)
But, my hair does FEEL so much better - softer, healthier, less dry, and the
grey makes it shine, which is nice!

Have you noticed your hair being thicker since you've stopped coloring it?

Well, my hair is very fine textured by nature, so it never seems really thick
even in the best of circumstances. However it does seem way healthier, because
when I was coloring all the time it would get so dry is was almost like straw -
which made it seem thin and ugly sometimes. I like it much better now.

Welcome.....I have been reading your posts last few weeks and havent had time to
answer...I decided today I would reply before I do anything else.
It has been 6 months since I have colored my hair and love it. Its very short,
still, but much better now than before. I will post pics today too.
I think my hair is much healthier looks really shiny and I sure dont see as much
of it on the floor, it could be the color makes it a little harder to see huh?
I thought about doing low lights before I stopped coloring, but after I thought
about it...it was just delaying the process, and would still cost me some cash.
I just went cold turkey. I have thought time to time, well I could spray on
some color now or do a wash out rinse, but my hairdresser told me that when you
do that it will scar your hair. Scar meaning it will leave a residue on the
virgin hair you just grew out. so I am very proud of my silver stuff....and get
tons and tons of compliments both men and women...some saying they have been
thinking of doing the same thing.
Most of all only being 49, I thought I would be looked at as a "granny" but not
true. I had a guy ask me if I colored my hair...HA! I probably feel sexier and
more confident than I did with my colored hair and my boyfriend loves it.
Good luck to everyone....I will post a few more pics today and in another few
months.

I love your photos. Your hair is a beautiful silver. No wonder you get all the
compliments! I posted one of my family and as you can see mine is long and
definitely not as silver. I am hoping with time more silver will appear!

Cindy....Thank you for the compliment....but I do have to confess, I am so
jealous of your pics....I do miss my long hair but I just could not handle the
growing out with the dark and "white" issue, since mine is soooo white! You do
look beautiful in your pics with your family. Hopefully by next year this time
I will be able to post a pic that my hair will be down to my shoulders!

I am just wondering if anyone has a
favorite shampoo for enhancing the gray. I am using Aveda Blue Malva and I
like it well enough, but just am always looking for something that might be a
little bit better. Thanks.
Ann, I've been thinking about the same thing. I've been using Joico and I like it okay (though I don't like the fragrance; it's a little too sweet/floral for my taste). If there's something anyone's just really enthusiastic about, please tell us! :-) ---- Anita, in Dallas

Biolage has a blue shampoo, as well as Pantene. If you have a Sally's Beauty
Supply store, the generic brands of blue shampoo work just as well. Just buy a
really good conditioner...it makes all the difference. I use a blue conditioner
after shampooing and also use a spray and leave in conditioner for extra shine,
made by Ion.

$$$ Thanks, Mere. I didn't know Biolage had a blue variety. I've got huge, unopened bottles of their
color-protect shampoo and conditioner; I'll have to see if I can exchange them.
Sally was my first stop to buy the Aura brand (Sally's Aveda knock-off) of Blue Malva, but Aura has cut way back on their varieties and now only makes the Rosemary Mint and one other kind, I think. They only had two blue shampoos: Shimmer Lights and another on that smelled just like the Joico brand I've been using, which is mostly what I don't like. And no blue conditioner.
Is the Ion leave-in conditioner for gray hair? Do you spray it on before blowdrying or after? And do you notice any extra shine when you use compared to when you don't? --- Anita

Hi Anita. I order my pantene shampoo and conditioner online....even with
shipping it is cheaper than driving around and trying to find it. I order from: http://www.facevaluesonline.com and the companies name is Harmon. They sell the
pantene silver expressions shampoo for 4.89 for 13 oz and the same for the
silver expressions conditioner. Shipping for 6 bottles was 4.95. Gas here is
2.59 a gallon...lol.
I don't use this shampoo and conditioner every time I wash my hair. In between I
use John Freida shampoo for platinum blonde hair then condition with any
conditioner for dry hair...which is usually how silver, gray hair gets. After
towel drying, I use Ion spray leave in conditioner for all colors of hair or a
product called Snap by Redken, also left in on the ends of my hair. Keeps frizz
away and makes hair look good.
Just one thing...if you want to avoid frizz, NEVER towel-dry your hair. The
texture of terrycloth opens the cuticles of the hair (or some such scientific
nonsense!), creating frizz.
Squeeze as much water as you can out while in the shower, then use a shami (sp?)
or a cotton T-shirt to squeeze out more moisture (NEVER "rub" your hair to dry
it).
My kids think I'mm silly walking around the house with a T-shirt wrapped around
my head, but it works! :)

Hi everyone! I am 34 years old, and found my first gray at age 20. I didn't have MUCH gray, but it was enough to freak me out, so I've been dyeing my hair for over a decade. Now at 34, I suddenly am starting to wonder what exactly I am trying to hide. I'm in BETTER shape physically than I've been in since college, and I'm NOT that worried about people realizing I'm not 20 anymore! What exactly am I trying to prove by dyeing my hair when I HATE dealing with touch-ups every few weeks?
Anyway, I am starting the journey of growing out haircolor. I still don't have a LOT of gray by most standards, but I do have a significant amount on the top of my head and at the temples. To be honest, I'm almost worried that I won't have ENOUGH gray at this point, and that it will be just gray enough to make my
very dark brown hair look dingy. However, I do NOT want to keep dyeing and dyeing, only to have more and more gray come in. It seems to me that is will be easier to wean myself off of dyeing now than it would be in another decade or so, when I would get a much more noticeable "skunk stripe" effect.
I've been using Robert Craig haircolor (which I absolutely LOVE...it is soooo much better than anything else I ever tried!) for quite awhile, and it doesn't lift my base color at all, so for a number of months to help in my transitioning, I swapped my normal dark brown color for a very light brown, and didn't leave the dye on for nearly as long. That was enough to make the gray look like blonde highlights, and to sort of blend it in w/ the darker brown. However, I have now abandoned the coloring totally, and I have about an inch of roots. Most people assure me that they aren't that noticeable, but I can DEFINITELY notice them, and it is so, so
hard not to color again. I've thought about trying to do lowlights w/ the Robert Craig color, but to be honest, I feel like it'll be setting me back at this point to color more uncolored hair, so I'd rather just tough it out if I can. PLEASE tell me that I will get through this without losing my mind!!!
I look forward to talking with all of you and learning from you! :-)
Hi Dawn,
Welcome to the group. You will find a great deal of support here. You will get
through it. The real colour growing out can be flat, but in my case it was to
do with wearing the wrong colours. Now I wear the right colours for my real
skin, my real hair and my real eyes. Before I was dressing to go with my
coloured hair. And I could never be without makeup because my haircolour was
wrong for my natural skin.
I try to enhance my white hair as much as possible with the colours I wear.
I had a couple of very white highlights put in the top front, as the dyed brown
hair was growing out. But it was very subtle. I did one round of lowlights and
regretted it for months as it put me back where I started.

$$$ Thanks, Mere. I have a pretty easy time finding Pantene's silver
expressions shampoo; the conditioner was a bit more of a hunt, but I've found
that a Kroger grocery store on my way home from work carries it. I buy 2-3 at a
time, just in case! ;-)

$$$ I'll have to check for these. --- Anita, in Dallas
That's hard to say - when I colored, my hair was wavy. Now that the grey is
"free", it's super curly, so it SEEMS fuller. (From what other people have said,
grey hair has a tendency to be kinky)

I guess we need to put up new pictures, and then maybe everyone one could take a
guess, huh?
