Hi Peg,
Welcome to the group. It is a terrific group with great support and oodles of
inspiration.

I am 54 with not much grey. My dyed color (which was redddish brown) has been
totally
grown out for at least 6 months and I feel so much freedom and excitement about
it. The
white hair does not show up in photos but I plan on posting a new one soon
because it is
now to the length I want. Last spring I had taken the plunge and gotten it cut
short just to
get the color off knowing the shortness would not flatter me tremendously but
just
because I was sick of it.

My new hairdresser Danny (who only does cutting, not coloring) is all for my
plan of
letting it go nature's way. When I told him the first time I went to him I was
never going to
color again. He said "that's okay it is just a matter of preference"

I am totally unconcerned with what others think of the whites peeking through. I
think
they are lovely. Everyone who matters to me accepts it. I am in a very good
position to
follow my plan of going white slowly. Sounds like you are, too!

Debbie

Hi,

I was asked to introduce myself to the group by answering the following questions, so here goes:

1. What country/state are you from? California USA, these days, but I'm still a Michigander at heart!

2. Are you considering showing your gray, are in the process or are already displaying a gray mane? I am "in the process"; I just got my hair cut this morning without having it colored. I have about 1/4 inch of gray showing.

3. What kind of reception have you received from family and friends? My husband fully supports my decision; he has nice black and gray hair, so maybe that's why. Family doesn't know about it yet, but I don't think they will have a problem with it.

4. What are your reasons? Fears? I was always ambivalent about coloring my hair (it is medium brown, slightly wavy, and fine textured), and noticed that my scalp was getting irritated by the dye, so I thought it was time to get real... I am 45 years old and didn't want to keep coloring it for years on end. When she was in her forties, my mother did a million things with her hair (some of them quite strange) and I felt no need to follow her example. I guess my main fear is looking old.

5. What support would you like to get from this group? I don't need major support; just want to connect with women going through this, many of whom I imagine are around the same age as myself.

6. Do you feel voluntary member pictures would be helpful? Sure; I'll try to post periodically as time permits.

I look forward to communicating with everyone in the group!

Congratulations, Kathleen!
Great story!  I had to laugh about the accidental extra bottle of hair color.

I went to my hairdresser yesterday and she asked if I wanted color again.  I just said, "No, thanks."  As I was leaving, I told her that I had no plans to color my hair again.  She gave me a look and simply said, "Really?"  She has a couple of years on me and keeps her hair jet black (color every two weeks).  She's convinced that I will change my mind.  Laughing....

Have a good one,
Karen

Subject: [deciding_to_go_gray] Salt and Pepper

Well, yesterday I got a trim. Now I have a couple little wisps of color on the ends, but I'm mostly salt-and-pepper with a gray streak in the front. I have curly hair, but had it blown out. I think that makes the color show more.

Last night, I went to the annual neighborhood cookie swap and got a lot of compliments. I decided to just throw it out there, so I told a few people that I was sick of coloring every 3 weeks, having an itchy scalp, etc. They all color, but were supportive and nice.

Today, the kids next door came over and said, "You have gray hair?" They thought I dyed it gray. I told them that I stopped dying it brown. They were very confused. I guess they think only "old" people have gray hair. Too funny.

It's been an interesting journey. A couple weeks ago, my mom handed me a box of hair color because she "accidently bought extra". Right!

It's kind of amazing the difference in just this cut. I haven't colored since last January/February and chopped off a couple of inches along the way. It's a chin-length bob. I know people have mixed feelings about cutting off the color, but it worked for me and I like the style and changing things up.

It is kind of funny sitting at the hair dresser and having someone getting color in the next chair. I wonder what's going through their minds?

Thanks Janice, I appreciate it.  I love the color and so does my husband….now my kids and sisters are another story LOL.  If my husband didn’t mind it so short, I might keep it at this length, but he loves long hair, so I might go a little longer. Your hair looks great short and the color is awesome.

Hi Ann in San Diego, this is Janice in Miami - I love the length of
your hair! I think it is a very flattering look. After the next cut,
you and your silver hair are going to look fabulous!

I keep on trying to get mine to get there, but once I reach that
awkward stage when I look and feel unkempt, I rush to chop it off
again.

Regards to all!

So glad you posted these, ladies! These are terrific photos. Your hair looks wonderful. ;-)

I keep thinking I should post a couple of new ones, but really, I don't look much different "on the outside," so to speak. The top layer is growing ever so slowly it seems like. Underneath, now, I can see some definite progress. I'll try to remember to take my camera with me when I get a trim next month and have my hairdresser take a couple pix for comparison. --- Anita, in Dallas

Hi everyone,

I finally got around to posting a couple of new pictures. I have to
say I didn't realize how SHORT my hair was until I saw the new
picture. It has been 4 months since I cut it. I think I have one more
cut to be completely natural, but I really want to get some length
before I do that again. I can't believe how much better I feel
with "natural" hair color.

Actually, I had a few hairs along my temples that went grey my senior
year in high school. I started coloring the next year, so I have no
idea how long it's been like this. :)

Now it's ALL the hair in front - temples, hairline - the brown doesn't
start to show until about two inches back from my forehead hairline.
Now that I think about it, I probably like it more than if it
were "salt and pepper".

Hi Anne,
Thanks for the note and the welcome to the group.

You are so right about Nicole's decision not to color.  So many of the critics just keep asking (aloud, no doubt) what happened to the Nicole with the red, curly locks?  I say, good for her -  she's going for it!

I couldn't remember her hair color in the Chanel ads so I popped over to YouTube to check them out and wow - she really was very blond.  The ash blond did made her look almost angelic and quite beautiful.  So, it is possible that she decided to just let nature take its course after that.

While checking for the ads, I ran across this site which shows an even more recent close-ups:

You will have to cut and paste it into your browser but you can really see where she's headed in such a short period of time.

Hi Karen and welcome to the group. Thank you very much for drawing my attention to
NIcole's decision. It is a decision not to colour - its really upsetting everyone it seems. They
will probably keep putting her in wigs for her roles, but how fantastic to be natural in her
free time! Incidently, her Chanel campaign, the most recent shots on advertising posters, her
hair looks so damn ash that you can really see what she is going to look like all natural and I
was wondering whether this inspired her.

Roe thank you for your hard work so that we can all share.

I've been meaning to mention this for a month or so. I don't know how many of
you watch NBC or MSNBC, but Howard Fineman, who is frequent commenter on Keith
Olbermann's show has had dyed black or brownish red hair for a lonnnnggggg time.
And it's gotten to the point where it's really obvious it's dyed. Those bright
studio lights don't do a lot of color jobs any favors, IMO.

But not so much anymore! His roots are growing in and they are white. What's
surprising to me is that he's doing this on tv and the network is *allowing* it!
Wonder if they'd be as accommodating with a woman? I hope so.

Anyway, here's a youtube clip from a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I don't
know how to make screen caps, but if you don't want to watch the segment, Howard
comes on at about 4 minutes in.

And of course, we can't forget Keith's gorgeous gray hair, either!

Anita,
Thanks for your question. My first thoughts are these. Go to Diana's
website and see some of the stories depicted there. She is really good
at showing us how hot gray hair can look.

I love her 3 videos on makeup, clothes and accessories. The advice is
so good. I think if it is obvious that your hair color is a choice and
a choice you love then it becomes a non-issue.

I think how comfortable you are in your skin and how happy you are with
yourself are so attractive to men that your hair can be green and they
would not notice.

I will keep you in my prayers and wish you all the best and most of all
I pray that your future companion is a friend first.

Those are my thoughts, for whatever they're worth... go Anita!!!

Hi Anita,
Thanks for the warm welcome, too! I could use it because it's a little cooler than normal here in Pearland this morning but...it's probably even colder in Dallas.

I took some time yesterday and looked at all of the photos and was totally inspired.  When I saw your's I kept thinking, "Hmmm...she looks very familiar."  Then I remembered.  I saw your photo posted on Going Gray Looking Great (another wonderful website).  There was another woman's photo in the albums that I saw elsewhere and thought - wow, this really is the place to be.  Congratulations on being color-free for almost a year and loving it!  That has to feel good.

I couldn't read many of older messages yesterday because Yahoo said that they were not available at the time.  Hopefully, I will be able to access them soon.

And, before I forget, thank you to the person who mentioned this Yahoo group in a blogger's comments section.  I'm sorry that I didn't write your name down but just know you have probably led many others here.

Have a good day,
Karen

Roe thank you for your hard work so that we can all share.

Right now only 12 of have voted. Requiring new members to write
an intro seems to be well ahead with 8 votes. Please take the time
to vote if you want your choice known.

Please let me know if you want to help moderate, again I will consider
regular contributors.

I can offer in our little intro blurb that the intro can be kept
private if so requested.

Hi Roe,

Thank you for the warm welcome!  I will definitely check out the pictures and the archives.  I'm sure there's a lot of good advice and information that has been posted.

I found you via a website and wish that I had written the name down.  But I'm happy that the group member mentioned it in response to a posted question.  I hope more people happen upon it as I did.

Warmest regards,
Karen

Hi Timothy,

Thanks for the encouragement.  You are so right - if I was back in Indiana, I would have to visit the salon quite often to keep up.  I've never been one to bow to peer pressure but I think I would cave to family pressure.  :)  But, I do feel comfortable so maybe I really would hold up.  I'm having a sigh of relief right now.  You could probably feel it in Fort Worth...laughing.

It's amazing that you have family in Illinois.  I lived in one of the Chicago suburbs for about 8 years and now live in Pearland, Texas.

Thank you for the warm welcome!

I'm going for it!
Karen

Karen,
Welcome to the group. I enjoyed reading your intro message post. Glad
to see another Texan around. I'm in Fort Worth myself.

You mentioned the following in that post: "
4. What are my reasons? Fears?
My only fear is that I will look older than my mother and my
older sister! :) Luckily, they live in Indiana so the pressure
isn't that great. I just hope that I don't cave right before I see
them again."

Is it not great living away from the 'judgemental attitude and
pressure' of family'. That's one of the reasons I like being in Texas
away from family in Illinois.

As far a being gray and look older than mom and sis; who cares! As
long as it is styled nice, and your happy don't worry. Older women
and those that have a more mature look are mighty fine in my book!

Go for it!

Timothy

Yahoo!  I've been searching for answers to my 'graying hair' issue
for a little while and just needed to know that I wasn't alone in my
quest to just let me be me.  You don't find many pictures of women
with graying hair - especially celebrities.  In my search, I ran
across photos of Nicole Kidman and a lot of the comments about her
were negative because it appears that she is letting her hair gray a
bit.  I think she looks fabulous and so does Stacy London even though
people ask why she just won't color that little wisp of gray.

>      I am in the process of showing my gray.  I've started before
and decided to color it again and again.  This time, I plan to stick
with it.  I can't keep up with the grays and immediately afterwards
I hate seeing the color line.  I've been color free since about
June.  I really don't want to color my hair every 3 weeks because of
the chemicals, time and money.  About two weeks ago, my hair stylist
told me that she would color my hair for free.  I declined. Then I
started to worry - does it look that bad that she's offering to do it
for free?  She then told me that she colors her hair every two
weeks.  That was enough for me to know that I'm making the right
choice.

color my hair for a few years now.  My 7-year old daughter can't seem
to keep her hands off of my 'sparkling' temples and my 12-year old
son doesn't seem to notice at all.  My immediate family has been
pretty easy.
>      My mom, on the other hand, colors her hair and is always
telling me about the new color she's gotten and how wonderful it
looks.  Both of her sisters (my aunts) are about the same and color
their hair regularly.  And, my older sister has colored her hair for
as long as I can remember.  Recently, she's been wearing a wig and
freaked out when she realized that she's going gray.  She called my
mom last week in a state of panic because, 'those wigs are doing
something weird to my hair - it's gray.'  After my mother told her
that it's not the wig causing problems, she colored it the same day.
My mom thinks that I should continue to color my hair but she's not
extreme about it.  (I turned 44 in November).
>      My friends don't say anything about my hair but whenever hair
coloring comes up, I sometimes get a few looks like I may have
forgotten to do something.  Some of them are older and still color
their hair but haven't said anything.  Another friend is letting her
hair go for now but said she will eventually color it again.  Another
who is one year older had the most beautiful silver/brown hair color
but she dyed it this summer.  She said she felt old.  At the same
time, I've had a stranger tell me that I could knock ten years off my
age if I would just color the gray.  I didn't know her so it wasn't a
big issue.

>      Yes.  All of the fashion and style websites say that you had
better not go cold turkey with hair color.  You should wait until you
are at least 40% gray, get lowlights, opt for a great short haircut,
change your makeup and color palette etc.  ARRRRGGGHH!  I' ve seen
women who are leaving the bottle behind without all of the advice and
they look perfectly fine.  I just wish they were all made to feel
that gray is truly okay.  This time, I'm feeling better about it.

I am more than a year into my conversion from brunette to platinum
(sounds sexier than gray, right?). Hopefully by spring I will have
enough length to pull up into a pony tail - my ultimate goal.

A co-worker of 5 years has been very curious about the process - she
is 2 years older than I but not nearly as gray. Well in August she
took the plunge, and as of this week has completely natural hair - she
looks great. She always wears a very short, stylish do, so it was
easier/faster for her. We have our holiday party on Friday, I will try
to get a pic of the two of us and post it. I would say she is 20-25%
gray only - but the silver brightens her face so much. I think
particularly gals like us who had dark hair and kept it dark are
pleasantly surprised by the brightening effect of the gray.

Hang in there ladies.

Hi Karen, and welcome from another Texan!  I'm in Dallas.  I've been color-free since the end of January and I love the way my hair looks.  I need to get a new photo posted.  Have you had a chance to look through the picture albums, yet?  ---- Anita
