I thought I might experience that disconnect, but so far I'm not. I don't know if that's because my hair change isn't as dramatic a change as yours or what. Even though the front section around my face is totally platinum/silver, the rest is varying degrees of salt and pepper.
I do know I thought I'd be all grown out by now! But I guess since it's been about 18 months already, another 4 or 5 won't make much difference. ---- Anita, in Dallas

Subject: [deciding_to_go_gray] Still a stranger to myself
I decided to go gray in December 2007 and I'm finally there. But I am still having a problem seeing myself as gray haired. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same?
In my mind's eye, when I envision myself doing something in the future, or reliving something in the recent past, I see myself as a red head. Not the gray head I have become. I am still startled when I catch a glimpse of myself accidently in a mirror.
Don't get me wrong--I love being gray. Love the freedom, love the look, love not having too vivid hair which looked bizarre at my age. BUT....I just can't seem to get used to the real me. I kind of feel like a stranger in my own body. Very weird...
