I colored for ten years, too, and am one year and four months into growing the auburn color out. I'm guessing, given the general pokiness of my hair growth, that I've got another 4-6 months to go to get all the top layer grown out.
My biggest fear was looking older and maybe I'm delusional, but I don't think I do. I'm not going to say I look *younger* (drat it all!), but no older, either. I have a lot of white/platinum in the front and sides and more pepper/salt as it goes toward the back. I am way more conscious of undyed hair now than I ever was before and that's a pretty common trait.
Check out all the member pictures in the Photos section and you'll see us in all phases of the process and a lot of different end results, too,
as far as final colors/shades of gray, charcoal, pewter, silver, white. Gorgeous, every last one of'em! Another good resource for info and member pix and discussion is http://www.goinggraylookinggreat.com ---- Anita, in Dallas, TX

[deciding_to_go_gray] new member questionare
1. What country/state are you from?
USA/FL
2. Are you considering showing your gray, are in the process or are already displaying a gray mane?
I am considering showing my gray. I want to stop coloring my hair after coloring it for 10 years.
3. What kind of reception have you received from family and friends?
All say it will make me look older.
4. What are your reasons? Fears?
Reasons: Dislike the coloring process/chemicals. Living in FL the color fades quickly due to daily washing and sun.
Fears: My natural color might not be consistent all over my head. I fear the sides may be white with the top and back being salt and pepper.
5. What support would you like to get from this group?
Encouragement thru out the process. Tips, advice and help on how to go thru the process.
6. Do you feel voluntary member pictures would be helpful?

That's hard to say - when I colored, my hair was wavy. Now that the grey is "free", it's super curly, so it SEEMS fuller. (From what other people have said,...
